Alisan Porter – What If I Wake Up?
By; Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I’d say it’s country soul. Or more like a country record that was made in the 70’s.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Bonnie Rait, Joni Mitchell, Aretha, Janis…. more of late, Brandi Carlile and Kacey Musgraves. I sort of channeled them a lot for this record. There’s actually a song dedicated to each of these women.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Never Could.” Also, your next single “Wild One,” which is out April 26th.
A) “Never Could” is the story of love finding you and helping you find yourself. “Wild One” is just basically my bio.
Q) What do you think it is about these songs that fans connect to?
A) I mean, for me it’s something relatable in a lyric and a sick vocal. Sick vocals are kind of a thing of the past…but not for me.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) I wrote a lot of ideas in voice note form or I just wait for the universe to deliver. I’m just the vessel.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) All of it? Or half as much as Matt Rollings. [laughs] I wrote and co-produced the entire record. There isn’t a song on there that I didn’t write and create from the ground up.
Q) We loved you on “The Voice.” What was the best advice you received from a coach/mentor on the show?
A) Prob from Christina. She was always like, “Do it anyway”…Do you. The end.
Q) Have you kept in touch with former coach Christina Aguilera?
A) Yes! We are always in contact.
Q) What can fans expect from a live Alisan Porter performance?
A) Amazing vocals, harmonies, old songs, new songs and you’ll probably laugh…I’m funny sometimes.
Q) Will there be a full EP or album coming in the near future?
A) Full album in June!
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) I love to play in LA. I was a part of a great music scene here at The Mint, The Whiskey, The Viper Room, Hotel Café and all of the joints back in the day. I’ve played them a million times and I love LA and I think playing here is rad.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I’d kill to sing with Chris Stapleton. Kill.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Loving Lucious and Emily King at the moment.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) It’s the only way anyone “connects” anymore. So, aside from playing live it’s the only way to be seen and heard!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) They know how grateful I am and how excited I am to share this new music. Having someone appreciate your work and trust me, this is major work. It’s really what makes it all worth it.
