Interviews
Alisun – Around the World
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Eclectic funky and authentic
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Willow, Aurora and Peia
Q) How do your Mexican-Cuban parts play into the music that you make?
A) I feel that having a bicultural background has allowed me to experience a very unique perspective on the world living in the US and I’ve been blessed enough to experience so many different world cultures throughout my life that I also love, so I really just see myself as a citizen of the world and try to take from commonalities we can see throughout different places and traditions in the world.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Around the World.”
A) This song is really about listening to the younger generations and the children, listening to their hopes and dreams in attempts to make a better place for them to live in the future. I wrote this in response to Greta Thunberg’s speech about how our world leaders have let our generation down, as well as all generations to follow in regard to the climate crisis. I felt so impacted that a person of her age was such a strong voice for this that I had to make something out of it letting her and others know that they are not alone, and that there are people acting on positive change – not just saying they want it or projecting empty promises. It’s also a promise to my inner child and younger self because it’s something I’ve always cared about as well, and I want to make that version of me proud.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think each person has their own experience, but I hope that they’re able to connect with their own inner child and those hopes and dreams that we all have for our futures, connecting to the power of positive change through unity.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) The video is one that holds a lot of diversity and representation of different cultures as well as having children present in it to represent our younger selves, so I tried tying as close to the message as possible.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) I feel like each song has their own individual way of arriving to me, they mostly come as music, then lyrics for me and it could happen from a surge of inspiration, urge to write or being in more of a meditative state. It all really depends on what the song needs from me!
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I would say I try to have what I present to my producer as ready as possible always so that the idea is as clear as possible when it’s heard by someone I’m working with, so I’d say I have a pretty major hand in the production aspect of my work as well
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming out in the near future?
A) There is an EP of mine that came out in October! I’m so excited for it. These next couple of songs are very distinct but a little bit more mature in their sound in comparison to perhaps what has been heard until this moment.
Q) You were out on tour with Camila. Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) New York and Dominican Republic were some of my favorite places to perform because of the outstanding energy of the audience there!
Q) What can fans expect from a live performance by you?
A) Authenticity, love, and I would hope to be able to bring them to their own imagination as I perform.
Q) What songs of yours do you enjoy playing live the most or get the biggest fan response?
A) Up to this moment, “hypothermia” has been the main song I’ve had the opportunity to perform and I’m still growing in these ways, but I really love performing this song. ❤️
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Aurora, Billie Eilish and Willow would be amazing to collaborate with!
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I am currently listening to Andrew Birds new song “rare birds,” and I really like his style and feeling that he creates of being on an adventure present here and now. He has a very unique style, so I really admire and love that about him.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) Social media is really something that allows us to share moments of our lives to the world and connect with people who are choosing to walk alongside your story in a way through social media. I wish I knew how to share and connect better, but I see my fans as people who are walking alongside this journey with me and that genuinely want to feel like they’re a part of it.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I would love to thank my fans and supporters because they truly are one of the most special parts of being an artist. They create the atmosphere for any environment in which we come to serve our art, so thank you so much for resonating with me and my creations.
