Interviews
Alonzo – Save Me From Myself
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I’d say my sound is a fusion of Genres. I always say I have too much soul to be pop and too much power not to be Rock. So, we call my genre Rock Pop Soul. [laughs]
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Most of my musical inspirations are power voice women. Patti Labelle, Tina Turner and Whitney Houston to name a few. I’d say I’m also very influenced by Michael Jackson and Prince.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Save Me From Myself.”
A) “Save Me From Myself” is a special song because it was the first song I recorded after being out of the studio for years. I cried while recording this song because it was such a moment of me taking responsibility for my life and where it was going. So often we point the finger and blame people for where our lives are. This song was about realizing and accepting that “Only you can save you from you.”
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think fans connect to all music they can relate their own life to. We all have experienced some form of sadness or depression. We all have been lost and wanted to give up. We ALL have wanted to be saved.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) We took a unique approach to this video. I wanted the video to confront mental health and depression in a serious yet stylish way. In the video, the bad version of me kidnaps the good version of me. The plan is for the bad version of me to kill me. Right before I’m about to die I see different messages of my future and the impact I will have on the world. It is in this moment that the good version of me refuses to die and fights back. This plays into the song because I’m literally saving myself from myself.

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) My processes can vary. I’ve personally been practicing celibacy while finishing my current EP. This has really enhanced my writing process because whenever I find myself in “the mood” I write. Before I went celibate, most of my songs were written on the spot in the studio but recently I’ve been writing a lot more at home.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) Oh, I’m literally right there every step of the way. I’m very hands on in every aspect of my career. Eric Zayne (the main artist/producer I work with) usually produces on the spot. So far, I’ve been there for the birth of every song and I literally get to see with my own eyes my babies come to life. (My Babies = My Music)
Q) For such a seasoned and talented dancer, what can fans expect from a live Alonzo performance?
A) Thank you! I need to brush up on my dancing it’s been a minute but when its time I will bust a move. [laughs] My live show literally has some of everything. Its electrifying, powerful, emotionally moving, and exciting all at the same time. I will dance, I will cry and most importantly SING from my heart. Can’t wait to go back on tour so I can share more moments like this.
Q) Will there be a full EP or album coming in the near future?
A) YES! Summer 2020. This is a promise.
Q) We loved you in Fatally Unique on “America’s Got Talent!” What did you personally take away from your time on the show?
A) Aww! Thank you! That means you guys are real fans. [laughs] “AGT” was such a huge moment for me when I was a dancer/choreographer. I took from it so many life lessons but most importantly the courage to start pursing music full time. I felt that I had helped those dancers achieve some of their dreams so it was time for me to truly pursue mine. Fatally Unique is still my baby though! Definitely plan on doing a relaunch one day.
Q) What did it mean to you to perform as a backup singer for Christina Aguilera at Disney’s Halloween Special?
A) That was freaking amazing. I was literally in awe the whole time and I just remember her coming over to us and telling us we sounded amazing.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I’d love to work with Jessie J or Normani. Also, I hope to work with Missy Elliot someday.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I’ve been listening to a lot of my friend’s music recently. I listed a few below. They are some artists you guys should definitely check out!
Sam Harmonix ft. J Young – “Dopamine”
Fenyx – “Too High”
Cameron Wright – “Still”
Justin Michael Williams – “Here with Me”
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) Honestly, I’d much prefer to connect with them on tour in person, but we are in a time right now where it’s almost impossible for a rising new artist to have a career and be seen without social media. It’s really important to me because it is allowing me to grow my fan base and that I really appreciate. There are many people that would have never heard of me without it.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I just want to take this last minute to remind whoever is reading right now that you are special. You are worthy! You are great! You are beautiful and you are powerful! You deserve to be happy and you are loved. You have strength and power inside of you that you haven’t even discovered yet. You deserve to see your dreams become reality and this is confirmation that you will! Sending everyone Love and Peace!
