Amanda Leighton – The Fosters

Q) Have you added anything to your role as Emma on The Fosters that may not necessarily have been in the script?

A) When I read the description of Emma, I already had a good feeling of who she was because we had quite a lot in common. Of course, I always try to bring myself to every part that I play because what better way to stand out then to just be yourself? I am very sarcastic in real life so I wanted her to have some wittiness and to have a good sense of humor. I made her a little more playful and threw in pushing Jesus around a little because I felt that was how guys act around each other and she would have a little of that since she’s “one of the guys.” I also had to make her a little feminine so that Jesus would be interested in her. There’s a fine line when you are playing a tomboy/love interest.

Q) You have such wonderful chemistry with Jake T. Austin, did it come naturally or did it take time to develop?

A) It came naturally. After our first scene we taped on the beach, everyone on set was coming up to me saying, “You guys have great chemistry.” It’s what you hope for.

Q) What hurdles can you tease fans will see this season between Emma and Jesus?

A) Jesus having to deal with Emma’s assertiveness. It worked in the friendship, but will it work in the relationship? Jesus has never had a strong girlfriend before.

Q) Will we meet any of Emma’s family this season and see more of her home life?

A) Not so much her family and home life, but you will find out a little more about Emma in the first half of Season 2. Maybe we will see more about her home life to come in the rest of the season…

Q) What is your favorite aspect of Emma?

A) I love the friendship her and Jesus have first and foremost. They have fun together and I truly believe she wants what is best for him. I also love that Emma knows who she is and goes for what she wants. She is honest, assertive and an awesome flirt. I could borrow a few moves from her! [laughs]

Q) Who has been your favorite director to work with on the show and why?

A) I loved working with Elodie Keene because I had worked with her on “Pretty Little Liars” and we hit it off. She’s done a couple episodes of “The Fosters” and it’s been a blast.

Q) Is there any cast member you have not worked with much that you would love to have more scenes with?

A) Maia Mitchell and I have talked about wanting to do more scenes together. I would love to do an emotional scene with her. I screen tested with her for the part of Leila in Teen Beach Musical. So, we have actually done scenes together, they just haven’t been shown to anyone. [laughs]

Q) Are you enjoying the instant fan feedback that social media provides?

A) I am! It’s been nice to talk with and get to know fans. It’s been a very different experience than what I had with fans of “Make It or Break It.” I was not a very nice character on that show and people would tweet me and say I just needed to die… I’m hoping Emma doesn’t turn evil and start poisoning people because I think “The Fosters” fan’s would really let me have it!! [laughs]

Q) What are some quick and easy fashion tips that you can share with fans?

A) Layer things and keep it simple. I also throw my hair up in a fast bun when I’m in a time crunch, it’s always cute and stylish. I also love beach texture spray for natural waves especially during summer time!

Q)  Is there anything else about the new season of “The Fosters” you would like to share?

A) It’s going to be a great season, the writers will not disappoint the fans with what they’ve got coming. You’re going to meet a lot of new faces and talented actors along with some old faces that will be returning so make sure you watch!
