Interviews
Andrea Brooks – Santa’s Boots
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) What are the recent projects you are working on?
A) I’m currently working on the fourth season of “Supergirl,” so that has been keeping me busy. I also just wrapped “When Calls the Heart” at the very end of October. I’ve got some fun things slated for the new year, so I will be sure to keep everyone posted!
Q) Please tell us the premise for Santa’s Boots.
A) Santa’s Boots is a Christmas love story involving a bit of a magical Cinderella storyline.
Q) How was your character Jenny originally described to you?
A) Jenny is a bit of a tomboy in comparison to other characters that I’ve played. She’s a small-town girl and she works on a Christmas tree farm during the winter months. She was originally described to me as warm and kindhearted character who is possibly clutching onto her past a little too much.
Q) What made you want to be a part of the film?
A) The timing of this project was perfect. I started shooting right after a trip to Hawaii and right before “Supergirl” and “When Calls the Heart” began shooting. I always jump at the chance to be involved in Christmas projects because watching Christmas television movies has become such a big tradition in so many households.
Q) Talk about working with costar Noah Mills.
A) Noah was incredibly kind and very present as an actor. Our characters have a few emotional scenes in this project, and he was very respectful and encouraging.
Q) Often the setting plays a role in these holiday films. How would you say that the setting stands out for Santa’s Boots?
A) This project has Christmas written all over it. I can tell you that the Christmas farm we shot at was one of the most impressive I’ve ever seen! They must have had thousands of trees growing there!
Q) What advice did director Shawn Tolleson offer that you took to heart while filming?
A) Shawn was lovely to work with. She’s such a kind person and she really does her best to get to know each individual actor on set. She had a clear vision of what she wanted given that she had co-written the project. She was also very willing to collaborate and take the time to discuss details without making you feel rushed. I would love to work with her again.
Q) You are a part of social media are you excited to see what your fans think of the movie?
A) It’s always fun to see the reactions on Twitter and Instagram. I always have fun interacting with fans. I hope that people feel like that have been put in the Christmas spirit after watching this movie.
Q) We’ve loved seeing you on “Supergirl!” Eve has such a great respect for Lena, she is loyal and dedicated. What is it that you think she admires most about Lena and wishes she saw in herself? What connects them?
A) Eve and Lena (Katie McGrath) are connected through their passion for science. Lena was the first one to recognize Eve’s quirky brilliance while she was working at CatCo and, of course, Eve has always been a big fan of Lena’s. Getting poached from CatCo was a huge step up for Eve and she works very hard to prove herself to Lena. Of course, she still has her quirks and I love that about this character.
Q) What do you think about the powerful dynamic this season bringing the series back to being even more female forward with Lena, Kara, Alex and Nia?
A) It’s fantastic. This has always been a female driven show and I love the fact that they are really driving that point home this season. Nia (Nicole Maines) was a fantastic addition.
Q) As we see the season of “Supergirl” progress, what can we expect with Eve and her personal and professional relationship with Lena?
A) I’m always hoping for more science and more collaboration between the two characters. I adore working with Katie McGrath. We always have so much fun on set together. We call ourselves “Team Science.”
Q) What I love about Supergirl is that it doesn’t shy away from addressing topical issues. It weaves the fantasy of the universe with morsels of our current political landscape. Did you pick up on any touches or nods this season?
A) Very much so. This season is in many was a reflection of the times we find ourselves in. In many ways the show seems to be both a form of escapism (via the fantasy elements) and a reflection of our society. I believe that delicate balance has been handled beautifully by the writers. I’m always eager to read the next script to see where things are going.
Q) One thing that sets Supergirl’s writing apart is the way it pushes boundaries, keeps viewers on their toes and tugs at their heartstrings all at the same time. When you read the season four scripts, what really stood out emotionally and connected for you?
A) In the first episode there was a great scene between Nia and Kara where Kara highlights the importance of not being afraid to make waves. I loved that scene and, in many ways, I believe it sets the tone for the season.
Q) We’ll also be seeing you on “When Calls the Heart” next season. What can you tease is in store for Faith Carter?
A) I’ve been playing the role of Faith Carter for five years and it’s been so much fun to see her grow and mature throughout the seasons. This season really pushes Faith into a new light in that you will see her confront aspects of her past that she has buried deep inside. Faith often pushes aside her own feelings in order to do her job and help her community. She’s going to confront her feelings in new and exciting ways this season and I can’t wait for Hearties to see.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and the work that you do?
A) Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Your kindness and support mean so much.
