Interviews
Anya Nami – Dirty Dream
By: Francesca Fortino
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I’d say it’s pop with hints of indie and jazz (a tiny bit). I hope to experiment more in the future but stay in line with pop music anyway.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Adele, Billie Eilish, Radiohead
Q) Tell us your usual routine for songwriting, if there is really a routine about it, or if it is a more spontaneous thing.
A) Usually, some melody just starts playing in my head at random moments so I rush to the piano to record it. I wrote all of my songs on the piano first because it’s what I’m best at.
Q) What was your reaction to the big success that your first single “‘Unsubstantial” had last year?
A) Ooohh, it was fantastic. I came up with the idea of writing a song based on my favorite game character at that time and it was easy to do the visuals/videos, so I’d say it was a successful strategy.
Q) Since you are very famous on TikTok and your songs are very well received even on Spotify, how does being the face of some of the most influential playlists make you feel?
A) Well, if songs are supported by playlists, it means that more and more people are starting to like my music, so I feel hope for the future and a lot of motivation to work harder.
Q) Talking about your single “Idea 22,” did you pitch the idea of a collaboration to Gibran Alcocer or was it the other way around?
A) I really loved that music piece by Gibran and made a short clip with my voiceover for TikTok and Instagram. It went viral and he reached out to me after a while and offered to make an official collaboration. So, I don’t really know who was first here. [laughs]
Q) Talk us through your new single “Dirty Dream.” What’s the true story behind it? What pushed you to write this song?
A) I had a relationship with an older guy (48) a few years ago and, in general, I love age gaps. This song was mostly inspired by a German actor I really like, but my own story is relatable here too.
Q) Since the production is a mix of drums and bass, how did this combination of instruments come to life?
A) I wanted to put a bit of jazz and make the song sound like it’s from a musical.
Q) What kind of fan reaction have you been getting to the song?
A) People didn’t really expect such a plot twist in my art after the “Bread” song. But I think it played for the better! Many people, especially girls, share my interest so I’ve seen a lot of positive comments.
Q) We heard that you are planning on releasing an EP. When can fans expect it to be released?
A) Maybe this year or next year. I’m writing the material for that right now.
Q) Will we see a live performance of one of your singles soon enough? Is there even a tour in the making?
A) At the moment a club show is something I’d love to do. Hopefully, soon enough!
Q) Who would you love to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Artemas, I think. Also, girl in red, the Kid LAROI, Lana del Rey (God bless).
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your music?
A) There’s so much more I wanna share and do for you. I’m trying to come up with something interesting for every release and talk more about myself through music. I’m evolving and growing and so our huge family grows, too!
