Atomic Life – Stolen Youth

Q) How would you best describe your sound?

A) We straddle a few sounds. I would say that you can hear alternative rock, punk rock, and electronic elements in all of our songs.

Q) Who are your Top 3 musical influences?

A) My favorite bands sound very different from the music I’m making, and my listening taste changes from day today but my Top 3 influences today are The Mars Volta, Sheep, Dog & Wolf and Envy on the Coast.

Q) Tell us the story behind “Stolen Youth.”

A) “Stolen Youth” is a song about dreams deferred and placing (or misplacing) our hopes and desires onto those who cannot, or do not want to, carry them.

Q) Since the release of “Stolen Youth” what has been the reaction from fans and listeners to the new music?

A) For being such a new band I have to extend my gratitude to our community. Our fans and friends have been open and enthusiastic to everything we’ve released so far and I’m really grateful for that. Many of our earliest listeners found us through our heavier ties and have really embraced what we’re doing in this project. That level of support is really a testament to the hardcore and punk communities that we all started in, we wouldn’t be here without them.

Q) What is your songwriting process? Do you need music before you can craft your lyrics?

A) Song writing in this band is very collaborative, sometimes I will start a song on acoustic guitar or piano (that’s how “Strippers Anonymous” started). Sometimes Michael [Sadis] and/or Billy [Rymer] will be working on something and I’ll walk into the room and immediately have lyrics and melodies ready to go. Cody [Hosza] is straight up a musical genius so he’s very involved, too, but he’ll write a riff or melody and then we all get excited about it. There’s a lot of flexibility in our writing which keeps it really fun. In terms of lyrics, I do a lot of journaling, freewriting and poetry. Sometimes the songs come from there, but more often I will come up with lyrics as we’re writing, a lot of what you hear in our songs are the first words out of my mouth as we’re writing.

Q) How hands on has the band become to the production side of the music that Atomic Life creates?

A) We are all involved in every element of what we do. That being said, Billy is extremely involved in every aspect of writing, recording, producing, mixing and more. He demos everything, does all the preproduction and is with the song from start to finish. A lot of the vision and execution in production comes from his directions and intentions. The band has a lot of say in general but it really is Billy guiding us on production.

With the release of “Stolen Youth” is there a potential full-length album in the works?

A) We have a lot of new material that we are in the process of recording. We are planning out what the next steps are for that material. All I can promise is a lot of new material is on its way and you can hear unreleased materials at all of our shows.

Q) You have upcoming show dates in March. Are there any plans to expand performing on a larger National and potentially International level?

A) We are going on tour with The World is a Beautiful Place and I’m No Longer Afraid to Die toward the end of March. We will be starting on the East Coast and have dates in Boston, Brooklyn, Baltimore and Philadelphia and then we get to go to Canada for the first time where we will play Windsor and Toronto. We wrap up in Chicago. We have a few other things coming up that aren’t announced yet but I’ll tell you, I’m really excited for this year!

Q) Which song is your favorite to perform at live shows?

A) This really changes depending on the audience! I like to make people dance, so that changes from crowd to crowd.

Q) If you could collaborate with anyone on a new music project, who would you love to work with and why?

A) I hope I get to collaborate with lots of artists. I am a very new musician and every time I get to work with anyone I’m really appreciative of their time and experience. I always find it expands my mind to work with any and everyone so anyone who wants to make something together… I’m really open to it.

Q) What would you like to say to your fans and supporters of your music? \

A) It is so humbling to receive the support and love you have shown us in such a short amount of time. I can’t wait to see you at the next show and if we haven’t had a chance to meet yet please introduce yourself!
