Interviews
Audrey Marie Anderson – The Unit
Q) What are the current projects that you have been working on?
A) I am shooting the TV show “The Unit” and it doesn’t leave much time for anything else.
Q) Please tell us about the premise for the show “The Unit” and about your character Kim Brown.
A) The show is about a group of special forces soldiers and the missions that they go on. The show also focuses on the wives of the men who are back on the base at home. It shows their day to day lives and how they deal with their husbands. Kim Brown is married to Bob Brown (played by Scott Foley) who is the newest recruit in the unit. We’re the newbies on base. Last season focused a lot on how my character dealt with learning about life in a secret organization.
Q) “The Unit” is in its second season. What do you think keeps drawing in so many viewers?
A) I think often times people tune in mostly for the men’s storylines with the missions themselves and sort of the espionage and action. I’ve heard from a lot of people, especially men, that they end up liking the women’s side of it a lot. They find themselves hooked in by the heart of the show, which is the women’s side. I think our show has a really nice balance. You have this sort of macho action aspect of the show and then you have the more emotional part of the show, which is the women back home. It has a little something for everything and it has a nice balance.
Q) Why did you originally want to be a part of the show?
A) The obvious would be because of David Mamet and Shawn Ryan. To tell you the truth, that was good and the amazing cast that was already in place, as well. I actually came in and replaced someone. The cast was already in place and they had already shot the pilot. They recast the role of Kim Brown and I was, actually, able to watch the pilot before I auditioned. I saw how good the show was and, to tell you the truth, I didn’t think in a million years that I would get this role. I thought when I read it on paper I said, “They are not going to see me as this part.” I was wrong! It was very exciting when I got it!
Q) What has been your most memorable moment from filming the show?
A) I don’t think I have just one memorable moment. The thing is, we have a great set and our crew and cast are amazing. We have a lot of fun! There is a lot of joking around and we have a lot of fun with it. David Mamet directed two of the episodes last year and he’s directing the one I am shooting right now. It’s such an honor to work with him, as an actor. It’s like being in an acting class with him. That’s definitely a memorable thing.
Q) What changes can viewers expect to see this season?
A) I think that the missions themselves that the guys go on are really consistent with how interesting the storylines are and how interesting the missions are that these guys go on. I would say just a real subtle change, from the point of view of my character. My character is a bit more comfortable and confident in her position. She’s no longer the new blood in the unit and so it’s interesting. She had an arch from the first season and I feel like now Kim Brown has really come into her own, in a sense. It’s interesting to see how she deals with things differently from the other characters, differently from Molly (Regina Taylor) and Tiffy (Abby Brammell). As far as storylines go, Tiffy is no longer having an affair with the Colonel and. Kim Brown has a baby. I don’t want to give away too much!
Q) What is it like working with Scott Foley?
A) It’s great! He’s amazing! He’s very professional and a very talented actor.
Q) What is a typical day of filming like for you?
A) A lot of times, they will shoot most of the women scenes all at once and then most of the men’s scenes. So, I end up having a lot of days off. The days that I am working are pretty full long days. You go in for about thirteen to fourteen hour days. I’m basically there on set with Regina Taylor, who is incredible, and Abby Brammell, who is also incredible. It’s really such a nice set to be on. It’s a very well oiled machine at this point. We just go in and get it done. We have such great directors coming in and such great guest stars, just really high caliber professionals. I am constantly learning!
Q) What do you do in your spare time?
A) In my spare time, I am very domestic. I cook a lot and I take my dog to the dog park. I am very crafty and I sew. I constantly have a new sewing project or a new cooking project I want to do. I just made homemade hazelnut ice cream. I am very domestic and still, at this point, out there looking for my next job. I am auditioning for things and hoping to be able to do some projects on the side while I am doing “The Unit.” I am looking for a little bit of work and keeping the ball rolling.
Q) What would you say is your latest obsession? A book? A movie? A sport? An activity?
A) I really like the flea market here. In Los Angeles, we have a different flea market every Sunday. My boyfriend and I are pretty much obsessed with getting up at 7am every Sunday and head to the flea market. We get all kinds of great stuff!
