Interviews
B.J. Britt – Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) “Being Mary Jane” and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” take up most of my year.
Q) What can you tease is in store this season coming up for your “Agents of SHIELD” character Antoine?
A) I would love to tell you, but I’m not allowed to disclose the information.
Q) Was there anything you added to your role that wasn’t originally scripted for you?
A) I added to the role that was definitely not scripted for me was a delightful new Trip. When you bring on a new character, the writers have a certain way in their head how they want to portray the character. When you come in, you try to get to as close to that character as possible, but you also add your own flavor to it. Mo [Breen], the producer and writer, said with the character Trip he was a special agent. But when they said, “Cut,” I would hang out with people and we’d start laughing and joking. Mo said, “BJ, we have to get your character laughing. I love your smile!” My character wasn’t smiling at first. So, now he has this whole dynamic where they throw in jabs and one liners so he can show that smile of his. That’s one of the things that wasn’t scripted for Trip at first. He was there to do a job and get out. They didn’t really show that side of him where he could also be human and charming. So, they started incorporating lines where I could smile. I said to Mo, “I’ll just smile when I kill somebody.” She said, “No, no. Don’t do that! We’ll write some stuff in for you.”
Q) There is a huge cast to “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Who have you not had many scenes with or haven’t worked with at all that you would love to share screentime with?
A) We all get along so well and joke around and have a good time. Anyone they stick me with is going to have a good time. We don’t get to see any of the script before we walk into the table read. So, it is interesting to see who you will be paired up with for any scenes. I may not have done a lot of scenes with Coulson in a while, but then you walk into the table read and find out I have four big scenes with him. Whichever way the chips fall, that’s where I want to be. Anybody I have a scene with is going to be fun!
Q) You are a part of social media. What is it like for you getting immediate fan feedback after episodes air?
A) It’s great to interact with the fans and get the feedback. It’s an amazing feeling because what you are working on and who you are working with is doing a great job to where the fans love it. I love talking to the fans because it gives us feedback as to what they would want to see happen with different characters. It gives the writers more intel and they can decide to try things out with characters. Even though I wish I could tweet more, I like it a lot. Sometimes on social media people can abuse their powers because you don’t want to hear, “Trip is a dick! We hate him!” It’s just interesting to see fans get so involved with the storyline and it’s funny to see that interaction. They get to reach out and talk to their favorite character on social media.
Q) Is there anything else you would like to share with fans?
A) With “Being Mary Jane,” be ready for January. It’s going to be amazing and a lot of fun. B.E.T. is allowing us to expand on the script. You’ll love when it comes out in January. You’ll start to see promos and things coming out at the end of October. Stay tuned because I know a lot of people were wondering why the show was off for so long. Other than that, we’ll see you Tuesday nights at 9pm on ABC for “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” I’ll be live tweeting!
