Bec Lauder and The Noise – The Vessel

By: Malasha Parker

Q) How would you describe the music that you make as Bec Lauder and The Noise?

A) We make rock n’ roll with influence from a bunch of our other favorite genres like soul, funk, punk rock, psychedelic rock, pop, electronic music and folk.

Q) What are some themes you explore on your new LP The Vessel.

A) Self discovery, desire, fantasy and rebellion.

Q) The songs on the LP are about escaping the everyday chaos and enjoying your youth. What made this theme feel so right for the time right now?

A) This album is called The Vessel because I feel that it holds a bunch of secrets for the youth, all inspired by the concept of the hive mind or collective subconscious. In general, I’ve always been someone who seeks light and providing a blissful escape from reality has always been my favorite part about making music.

You could say it’s especially important now as well, given the state of the world.

Q) The song “Nobody Cares” is a culmination of what the LP is seeking to convey. What was the process behind making this song?

A) “Nobody Cares” is an important track to me; I wrote it during a time in my life where I felt like I was fighting against the world. It was an anecdote then and now, it will forever be my personal hype track for when I need to get out of my head and trust myself.

Q) Was it challenging mixing all of those musical textures of pop, lo-fi and punk rock together to get that perfect sound?

A) Not at all! It’s just what happened when I opened my mouth.

Q) What song(s) on The Vessel hold a special place in your heart and what makes it so significant for you?

A) “Find a Way” is a band favorite. I had a very special moment with my guitarist, Soph (“Shreddy” is what I call her), where we were both reminded why we are so in love with music- the song is about resilience.

Q) This LP has been written over the last couple years. What was the production process like for you?

A) The production process was really amazing, I got to work with so many incredible people on the album. Working with Timothy Youngman was especially amazing. He has one of the best ears I’ve ever witnessed and is an insane multi-instrumentalist. Elie Bashcow completely rocked my world with his creative choices and production process. It was also very special to co-produce some of the tracks with Shreddy, our guitarist. Overall I’m thrilled with my experience and Carl Bespolka perfectly mixed them all into one universe.

Q) Which song(s) on this LP have you been performing live that have really gotten a large fan response?

A) Top live picks are always “Give It,” “Bent Up,” “Oasis” and “Nobody Cares!”

Q) What message or emotion do you hope lingers with audiences that explore The Vessel as a whole?

A) Catharsis in any way.

Q) You’ve talked about how being on stage allows you to fully be immersed in the moment– like a vessel to the music. Describe that feeling and how it makes your performances more memorable for the fans.

A) If I’m able to be fully vulnerable with the crowd, I’m creating real time energy that people can feel. The performance is deep and in the moment, it makes for a raw connection that feels very precious.

Q) Now that you have released new music, what can fans expect to see from your upcoming performances?

A) New music and even more experimentation!

Q) What would you like to say to the fans and supporters of you and your music?

A) Thank you so much for listening. This is only the beginning.
