Beck Pete – Bite Down
By: Sammi Turano
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Textural, emotive, rough around the edges
Q) Who are some artists that are your musical influences?
A) Imogen Heap inspired me to start experimenting with my voice to enhance production. Shania Twain showed me that femininity and strength could co-exist.
Q) Your new single “Bite Down” has such a wonderful, powerful meaning behind it. Was there a specific event or moment that inspired it?
A) I wrote this at a time when I realized my extremism wasn’t serving me in the way it did once. I used it as a form of protection – sometimes I feel like the extremes are less vulnerable than defining what YOUR middle ground is.
I felt that I was ready to be closer to myself, let other people in more and let go of the control that comes with choosing an extreme.
Q) Did you expect to get such a major response from it right away?
A) You can never predict how a song will perform, but I do really believe in it, as I do every song on this album!
Q) What were some of the biggest challenges of creating this song?
A) The second verse was difficult to write because I had to dig deeper to access certain more vulnerable parts of myself to actually finish the song and make it.
Q) Are there plans on making a music video to accompany the song?
A) There is a music video out now! It’s my favorite one yet. You can check it out here!
Q) What is your songwriting process typically? Do you need music before you can work out lyrics?
A) Every song is different, but generally lyrics come first. I write a lot of lyrics without melody to come back to and keep them in a notebook that I bring to every session that I can look through once we have a “feeling” musically. Connor Sullivan, who I wrote this with, came up with the guitar part for this one almost immediately and I knew exactly which lyrics to pair with it. I only had the concept and the first verse started, but it came together so quickly. Most of the good ones seem to.
Q) Your music has been featured on several shows, including “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” How did it feel when you heard your songs featured on TV for the first time?
A) I feel that a song is always complimented by a visual pairing. I love to see how my songs help people tell their story, it’s one of the best feelings in the world.
Q) You have mentioned releasing more music this year. What can you tease about it?
A) The next song will make you move your bod. The one after might make you cry.
Q) What was the best piece of advice you got from someone that you worked with in the industry?
A) If you keep going, something will happen.
Q) Who would you love to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Bon Iver
Q) What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?
A) You make all of this worth it. This is only the beginning.
