Becoming a Man in 127 Steps
By: Paige Zinaman
In a society that is focused on traditions and what is considered to be normal, it’s hard to feel like you fit in when you’re unique. Being out of the norm and being one’s authentic self without the pressures of narrow-minded people is hard. As told through this film, viewers are shown the steps of a man who tells his truths through a very comedic way. Becoming a Man in 127 Steps is one that anyone who is struggling and feeling alone can relate to and I believe will become one of the best that shines a light on LGBTQIA youth.
Written by and starring Scott Turner Schofield and directed by Andrea James, Becoming A Man in 127 Steps sheds light on the reality of transgendered men who are rarely visible in the cultural imagination, amid tropes of transition and turmoil. This film is a phenomenal showcase of Scott Turner Schofield’s life. Accurately named, through one hundred and twenty-seven steps we, the audience, explores the deep themes of childhood, masculinity, love, sex, death and survival. Throughout the film viewers follow each step of Schofield’s life from his parents meeting to divorce to ultimately what it has taken for him to go through life and become his true self in the world.
This film also shines light on what it’s like to be a child who is so certain of who they are only to have their parents push it aside in denial. We watch as he celebrates Christmas and deal with a death that also helps him live a normal life…if only for a day. Finally, one day he gets to shine as a grand marshal of a small-town Pride parade. The movie continues to shine lights on the grey areas that society discards and puts up on a shelf, never be spoken about again. Thankfully, it still possesses the humor and light hearted tone that Schofield started with.
Scott Turner Schofield’s performance during this film stands out the most as he is genuine and humorous. Taking each step in stride, the movie points a spotlight on the hard times and then follows it up with his quick wit and manner of tone. His words, though comedic, bring real life issues to the surface and allows the audience to sit through and think about what they have just witnessed. These skills alone move the film in such a meaningful direction.
Becoming a Man in 127 Steps wouldn’t be where it was without the talented Andrea James and her ingenious directing ability. James’ vision throughout the film was to highlight and take notice of the importance of Schofield’s words. In doing so she created a beautiful film that has been needed in a time where people who are a part of the LGBTQIA community are still fighting to be seen and accepted.
This movie was a beautiful example of what life can be like once you’ve finally accepted who you are or who you want to become while acknowledging your past. Becoming a Man in 127 Steps, in my honest opinion, is a must see for anyone who is struggling with acceptance or living where they are just not sure of anything. It’s one that I would highly recommend to anyone who will listen. This film will bring joy and meaning throughout its entirety. From start to finish viewers will not be disappointed.
