Best Christmas Pageant Ever
By: Jamie Steinberg
Tis the season for holiday films and Best Christmas Pageant Ever is kicking things off. Based on the 1972 novel by Barbara Robinson, director Dallas Jenkins brings this sweet story to the big screen. This tale, narrated by the character Beth (Lauren Graham), is a charming story set in the 80’s that is poised to put us all in the holiday spirit and once again bring perspective to the time of Christmas.
Molly Belle Wright portrays a young Beth who recounts the story of how her mother Grace (Judy Greer) volunteers to direct the tiny town’s famed Christmas pageant. Grace has her hands full when the Herdman siblings (dubbed the “worst kids ever”) take an interest in taking part in the church pageant, with them finding themselves in the lead roles. The congregation may turn their noses up at the Herdman kids, but it’s clear that these children are simply neglected at home. So, it’s hard to blame them for acting out and it’s something that takes away from the ability to laugh at their hijinks.
Actress Greer makes the movie enjoyable with her signature snark and comedy. On-screen hubby Pete Holmes holds his own as well. But younger viewers will find it hard to connect with Jenkins’ film as it is more focused on message over humor. Jenkins being known for his work on the story of Jesus series “Chosen,” this should be expected from those who are familiar with his religious based tales. Plus, the adults in the movie are the only ones with recognizable acting names so kids won’t see any familiar faces.
While Best Christmas Pageant Ever gives off Bad News Bear vibes with its comedic nostalgic moments, it falls flat in making this ragtag bunch likeable. However, it is perfectly on point to remind us all the true meaning of Christmas.
