Interviews
Betty Moon – Boilermaker
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I would describe it as a cool mix of different sounds/genres. On one song it could have a funk vibe and on the other you could have something borderline heavy rock or even metal. I’ve always loved pop singers and rock bands, so I sort of blend the best of both worlds in my music. There’re always electronic tendencies in the songs as well.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) A lot of 70’s, 80’s and 90’s artists across so many genres. From Guns N’ Roses to Sade, there are so many to list. You can’t go wrong with Depeche Mode. They are also doing big things in 2023.
Q) What made you decide to cover the Royal Blood song “Boilermaker?”
A) I’ve always been a fan of Queens of the Stone Age, and through that I found Royal Blood many years back. When “Boilermaker” dropped I knew I had to put my touch on it. So many people cover classic tracks, but sometimes I always think how fun it would be to do something modern, especially from the rock genre.
Q) How did you switch up the song and make it your own?
A) I did my best to stick with the core of the track, but vocally is where I added my own touch. Having a female vocal range do the track was a huge differentiator of its own.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) To be honest, I love the video, but wasn’t thinking about it too much when working on the cover. I wanted to just lean on the audio version and then get into my own creative space to create the cover version.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think it’s the rock element and showing my older fans that I still love rock n’ roll. Over recent years I’ve leaned more into pop, electronic and other genres. I wanted to bring some of the guitar rock back into my music on recent albums.
Q) You have covered a number of tremendous songs before with your album Undercover. What are some other songs you’re considering giving the Betty Moon treatment?
A) I’ve been listening to a ton of Depeche Mode again recently. Maybe an EP of my favorite DM songs would be fun. What do you all think?
Q) When it comes to your music, what is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) Not necessarily. I may have some chords ready on guitar or a piano line in mind at home. Often, I have my Mac notes open or even a notepad and just start writing what comes to mind. Heck, there’s even times where I get something in my head and open up Pro Tools and get to work on a demo.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I do it all. I have my own recording studio here in the LA area. Back in the day I even ran a very popular studio in Canada that had platinum selling artists come through to record. I’m thankful I know how to do almost everything in this business, but I do of course partner with great musician friends, engineers, mixers and business people that can help move things forward.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) I’m working on a giant folder of new music at the moment. It may pan out to be an EP or LP. But for sure there are a handful of new singles close to being finished for 2023.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) I haven’t played a live show in a while, but some of my favorites are The Viper Room, Roxy and The Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood. I just love the whole Hollywood vibe, especially from recent decades. Things are changing lately, but that’s not always a bad thing.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Josh Homme, if you are reading this…give me a call!
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I’ve been listening to Dance Fever, a new album by Florence and the Machine. She is just fantastic all around, and this album has become a favorite as of late.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I mean, it’s really the most important and only way these days, right? I’m not hanging out at shows five nights a week or on tour full time, so I have to crutch on newsletters, social media and awesome press (thank you!) to spread the word to fans.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I really love and appreciate you all, through thick and thin you all make me want to keep doing this forever. Thank you for all the support and love for my music!
