The episode opens on a poster with a man’s face on it being cleaned by a worker. The scene opens up and we see the crest of the FBI and Willa (Dilan Gwyn) and Luke (Jonathan Whitesell) are sitting in a reception area. Luke doesn’t want to implicate Willa and her grandfather and when she hears that she confesses that everything Charlie (Eden Brolin) said during their confrontation at the bowling alley was true. Luke is shocked by the admission and wants to know if she could have woken Holden (Burkely Duffield) up, but Willa says it isn’t that simple. While that sinks in, an assistant arrives to tell the two that Agent Borden is finishing a call and will be out shortly.

As Willa starts talking about Luke’s suggestion that they stop seeing each other she says she feels better with him around. Luke is clearly distracted by something he is seeing and walks to the wall that had just been cleaned to look at a portrait. Just then Agent Borden (Malik McCall) appears to greet them. This Agent Borden is a middle aged black man.

As the two leave the FBI field office, Willa is on the phone with Daniel (Patrick Sabongui) telling him to secure the house and Arthur (Alex Diakun) now that they know Borden is a fake and out to get her hands on Hollow Sky and Arthur’s machine. Daniel asks Willa to return home immediately and warns her to be careful, but when he hangs up we see that Fake Agent Borden (Amy Farrington) is there with him. With Borden we see a number of armed masked men and Arthur himself being held against his will.

We learn that Daniel has betrayed Arthur to an unknown organization. When he asks for his promised payment he is promptly killed. As the men under Fake Borden clean out Arthur’s research and equipment, we got to the title screen.

Holden, Charlie and Jeff (Jeff Pierre) are waiting for Edgar (Jay Paulson) to find the key to the freezer which he hid, once he finds it he opens up the freezer and explains a little about how it forms a link to The Realm through the use of something called vantablack which turns it into a sensory deprivation tank. To get to the heart of the Realm thoug,h they need certain locations so they decide to go to Edgar’s old house.

Tess Shoemacher (Erika Alexander) is addressing a Hollow Sky congregation who are being kept in a building because of a “systems test.” We see that one of the congregation is Christine (Parveen Kaur) with her baby. Outside we see The Man In The Yellow Jacket (Peter Kelamis) waiting to speak with Shoemacher. He wants her to cut their losses after the disappearance of the people from the lab.

Sheriff Dayton (Toby Levins) is inspecting the carnage that is the police department, including dead police officers. He heads down and is confronted by Tom who is still alive and in his cell. He explains what happened and that Diego (Oscar Camacho) threatened his son and then left with the others. He implores the Sheriff to let him out so he can go protect his family meanwhile the Sheriff is clearly in shock.

Charlie and Edgar pretend to be from the gas company in order to get the current family out of Edgar’s old home. Luke and Willa have gone to the Hollow Sky compound and see signs of violence. Luke tries to reassure Willa that this isn’t his fault as she checks her gun for ammo. Willa says she is here to prevent the machine from falling into the wrong hands and costing people their lives. Meanwhile, Jeff and Holden are moving the freezer to Edgar’s old house and get into a deep conversation about the nature of reality but are interrupted by the invaders from the realm who are blocking the road. Diego attacks them, but Jeff manages to get them out of there.

Holden, Jeff, Edgar and Charlie are in Edgar’s old house assembling the equipment, they are building a faraday cage for the freezer. Edgar gives Holden his insight on destiny versus free will and he believes in the former. While Jeff and Charlie are talking, Charlie questions trusting Edgar while Jeff says he trusts Edgar as much as he trusts Charlie. Charlie is surprised when Jeff clarifies that he trusts her because Holden places his trust in her. Jeff goes onto explain that he feels guilty for Holden being in a coma in the first place which lead to the death of his brother.

Luke and Willa head into the barn at the Hollow Sky compound and find it empty before being interrupted by TMITYJ. He explains that everything was moved after the invaders from The Realm took the bodies in the cryogenics lab for their own. Willa tells him about fake agent Borden looking for their machine while he reveals that Frost (her father) isn’t dead.

Tom has come home with Sheriff Dayton and meets Diane (Romy Rosemont) there. Once she is filled in on what happened at the police station she is frantic and wants to go looking for the boys, but Tom says he knows who to contact that might know where Holden is.

Over at the Edgar’s old place Jeff gets a phone call from Tom. Holden takes the phone and finds out what happened at the police station. Diane takes the phone, but at that moment Edgar finishes powering up the faraday cage, which kills all incoming electronic signals and causes the call to end. Diane tries to call Jeff back, but it goes straight to voicemail. While that happens someone knocks at their front door and the sheriff goes to investigate and returns with a package for Diane.

Holden wants to go protect his family, but Edgar argues that they need to close the portal in the Realm first, which he reluctantly agrees with. Edgar will guide him along the way, but Holden will have to communicate with The Realm itself to figure things out. Holden immediately finds himself in a body of water eventually swimming to the coast.

TMITYJ has brought Willa and Luke to the cryogenic lab where Frost is still being kept. He explains that he has faith that Frost will awaken. He leaves Willa to speak with her father where she vows to stop others from going to the Realm. Back at the Matthews house we have learned that this is the package that Pastor Ian prepared before he was killed. They put the DVD in the player and read the note he left. The footage is of Holden having a nightmare and shows clearly his telekinetic powers reacting to his dream.

Edgar guides Holden telling him where to go, he is reluctant to go back in the water but decides that is what The Realm wants him to do. He heads into the water and begins swimming and finds himself transported to the throne room he saw previously where he is greeted by Frost (Martin Donovan). He explains that sacrifice is needed in Holden’s case that is his desire for a normal life. In order to prove it, Frost asks him to kill the child he was literally. Despite young Holden’s (Dylan Schmid) begging for his life, Holden stabs him in the heart.

Back in the real-world Holden wakes up and they let him out. Holden immediately heads for home as he knows that closing the portal alerted the invaders already here and that Diego would definitely look for payback. Edgar reveals that the change in Holden is down to his new connection to The Realm then reveals that he is leaving now that he has done his part. Charlie says goodbye to Edgar and reveals that she had a vision when she touched the freezer, a vision of Holden dying. Tess is leaving when a SUV with police lights and a moving truck come down the driveway. She calls TMITYJ to inform him and Luke realizes that it is fake Agent Borden. She arrives and hands over a warrant for seizing everything they have been working on. Shoemacher then leads them inside.

Charlie and Holden arrive home to check on his parents while outside the invaders are waiting unnoticed.
