Blindspot – Frequently Recurring Struggle for Existence
By: Jessica Wolff
A man (Tom Pelphrey) and woman (Angela Gots) take out the driver (Wenne Alton Davis) and guard (David S. Lomax) of an armored truck with an explosive device, and then use the device to blow open the back doors. The man tells the woman that they’re only there for one thing and steals the case that matches the serial number on a paper.
Rich Dotcom (Ennis Esmer) gathers the team and shows them the board game he’s created based on their missions. Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander) comments that she’s both impressed and horrified as Rich shows them the lifelike figures of each agent he’s made as game pieces. Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) questions why his figure is much shorter than Patterson’s (Ashley Johnson) while Patterson asks why part of her figure’s face is melted off.
Before they can play the game, Patterson gets a notification and takes Jane and Weller to show them everything recovered from the Sandstorm safehouse. Jane explains that she’s never been to the safehouse, but that Shepherd made them identify which key belonged to which safehouse. Patterson questions if this is a trap, but Weller declares that Shepherd doesn’t have any more power over them. They look at the items and Jane recognizes a bunch of items from her past. Jane explains that her memories are coming back to her all at once, and declares she needs a minute upon picking up a blanket, ignoring Weller’s questions.
Rich explains to the team that the stolen case in the armored truck robbery points to a serial number contained in a tattoo on Jane’s body. Patterson explains to Edgar Reade (Rob Brown) that the company, a defense contractor of FBI interest, isn’t revealing what was stolen. They determine that the contractor was transporting something they shouldn’t have been, and Reade tells them to figure out what it was.
Tasha Zapata (Audrey Esparza) approaches Reade, informing him she hasn’t found any leads on Madeline. He warns her that they need to find Madeline to clear her name and tells her she has a team that can help her. Reade gets a notification about Jake Keaton (Chad Donella), and they visit him in the hospital. Keaton tells Zapata he doesn’t envy her current situation, and Reade asks him to help clear Zapata’s name. Keaton admits that he put her in a rough situation and tells her there’s a drive in his house that will prove she’s innocent.
Patterson shows Rich that the serial number in Jane’s tattoo also contains puzzle pieces that links to another tattoo. Patterson determines that the clue in the tattoo points to the periodic table and the numbers in the serial number point to the stolen case containing plutonium for a nuclear bomb. Reade tells the team that Dave Kirkpatrick (Peter Oldring) will be consulting on the case and assigns him to work with Patterson and Rich to find the plutonium.
Zapata tells Reade she found Keaton’s drive, and comments about how she’s realized how much of a toll these missions on the people they care about. Dave irritates Patterson with his remarks about how they should have looked closer into the contractor, but Rich suggests that he’s right and concludes that the robbery could have been an inside job. They look through the profiles of the employees and Dave recognizes the woman as Greta Smalls, an arms dealer. Dave comments that they’ve been trying to infiltrate the dark web to catch her, but that they’ve been unable to.
Weller finds Jane looking at the Sandstorm items, and she tells him she reached a dead end in the investigation. Weller asks what happened in the room, and Jane explains that the blanket reminded her of a time that Shepherd let her crawl into bed with her during a cold morning. She calls it one of the happiest memories of her life and theorizes that the safehouse was supposed to help Remi recover her memories once she finished her mission.
Rich enters the dark web and finds Greta’s auction. He tries to authorize a transaction with Greta, but another person writes that they have what she wants to buy. Dave determines that Greta is buying bomb casings to make a nuclear weapon. Greta agrees to the deal, but Rich is blocked from entering their private chat. Dave explains the bomb can kill thousands, and Rich hacks into the chatroom and finds the details of the meetup to complete the transaction.
Reade and Patterson provide details of the sale to the team, and debate how to stop the sale. Rich suggests they pose as the buyers, and tamper with the device so it can’t be used before posing as sellers to Greta. Dave argues he should do it, declaring that he’s familiar with fifty-eight nuclear devices. Jane points out that most devices have tracking capabilities, and Weller tells Dave to activate the tracking device as well. Rich uses his board game to reenact the details of how to successfully pull the operation off, and the team agrees to the plan.
Patterson switches the room number in the hotel as she and Dave wait in the room. Rich oversees the operation from the lab, informing the team that the seller, Constantine (David Vadim) has gotten on the elevator. He overrides the elevator so that it goes to the second instead of third floor, and Patterson invites him and his men into the hotel room posing as Greta. Constantine asks who Dave is, and simultaneous Dave claims he’s the muscle and Patterson declares he’s a technical advisor. Patterson explains Dave is kidding, but Dave continues to insist he is as strong as he is smart.
Reade tells him to get it together, and Patterson apologizes for Dave’s use of recreational powders. Constantine mentions that Greta used to do business with a man, and Rich identifies him. Constantine asks how he is, and Rich is able to figure out that the man was most likely killed by Constantine. Patterson asks Constantine to tell her, as he was the last person to see him alive, before asking if they’re going to complete the transaction. Constantine puts the bomb casing on the table and Dave inspects it, declaring it the real thing. Reade orders the FBI to move in and several agents burst in to arrest Constantine and his men.
Greta answers the door for Jane and Weller and goes to tells her partner they’re there. The man, Cameron Gibbs, walks out and recognizes Jane as Remi before embracing her. Cameron tells Greta that he knew Remi from their time working for Shepherd, and remarks that he wondered what happened to her after Sandstorm fell apart. Greta is suspicious of this coincidence, but Cameron points out he’s known Remi longer than her and that Remi helped him when he lost everything.
Greta asks to speak to him in private, and Weller asks what’s going on. Jane explains that Shepherd gave her the task of setting him up and manipulating him and that Remi turned Cameron into a murderer. Rich and Reade confirm that Cameron is responsible for multiple attacks against the military. Jane explains that Remi used Cameron’s badge to steal military files, which caused him to be dishonorably discharged. She explains that Cameron never knew she was responsible, and she used his anger at the military to recruit him.
Weller asks Patterson what’s taking so long, and Patterson reports they have a problem as Dave struggles with the casing. He tells her this isn’t one of the fifty-eight he’s familiar with, and Patterson orders him to hurry. Reade tells Jane and Weller to stall as Cameron tells them that he and Greta have talked it over and are ready to complete the transaction. Jane tells him she needs to determine if he’s still the man she remembers, and Weller offers to get them drinks.
Patterson orders Dave to hurry, and he tells her that he’s going to need to disable the tracker to tamper with the device. She tells him to do it, declaring they’ll find the plutonium another way. Cameron finishes telling a story of Remi’s Sandstorm exploits and asks if they can proceed with the transaction. Jane asks what they’re planning to do with the casing, but Greta tells her it’s none of her business. Greta asks to see the device, but Weller wants to confirm the funds have been transferred first.
Dave completes his work as Weller logs into the account. He complains about the wi-fi, and Rich hacks his computer to give him multiple popups. Weller apologizes and Dave hands Jane the device as Greta and Cameron help Weller get rid of the popups. Weller fixes the problem and Jane shows them the device. Reade tells them that the tracking device has been disabled and Jane tells Cameron they want in on their plans. Greta refuses, but Cameron tells her it would be an honor. He tells Jane to come with him and tells Greta to complete the transaction.
Outside, Cameron locks Jane is a supply room and explains that the plan was to kill the sellers. He tells her he can’t kill her but apologizes for Weller. Jane tries to warn Weller and breaks out of the supply closet. Greta pulls her gun on Weller, but he fights her off and pins her to the wall as Jane and the team arrive to apprehend her. Dave tells them that Cameron can still make a bomb without the device, and Reade tells Weller to get Greta to reveal his location.
Jane and Weller question Greta, but she refuses to cooperate. Jane warns her that people will die and asks if she wants to be a part of that. They tell Greta her cooperation will affect how she’s tried, and Greta reveals their meeting location. Rich uses their knowledge of Cameron to determine he’s targeting an event honoring the military and the guest of honor signed Cameron’s discharge papers. Rich gets notification of a vehicle theft and determines that Cameron has gotten what he needs to make the bomb.
Jane blames herself for endangering thousands because of her manipulation of Cameron. Weller reminds her that it was Remi, but Jane argues that she needs to take responsibility for the things she did as Remi. Reade tells them that the authorities refuse to evacuate the venue as they arrive. Jane suggests they split up and Jane finds Cameron setting up the bomb in the service tunnel. They point their guns at each other, and Cameron yells at her for selling him a defective device.
Jane tells him she hopes nobody else has to die today, and he asks what happened to her. She tries to talk him down as Weller tries to find them. Cameron tells her there’s only one way out, and she tells him that the innocent people are not collateral damage. He reminds her that the Remi he knew would support this and reminds her that the army screwed him over. Jane puts her gun down and tells him that she’s the one who did this to him. He asks her to explain, and she tells him what she did. Cameron asks why she’s telling him this, and she explains that she’s a different person now. He refuses to believe her, but she tells him she’s the one he wants to hurt. Cameron declares that she’ll die with everyone else, but Weller shoots him before he can detonate the bomb.
Later, Jane admits she doesn’t know if she can do this and admits that she can’t ignore the past. Weller tells her to keep fighting, but Jane tells him she’s tired of trying and just wants to forget. He comforts her as she breaks down. Zapata reports that there’s no leads on Madeline, and that Keaton’s drive only exonerates her. Zapata visits Keaton, telling him that she refuses to use the drive and promising to bring Madeline down to save them both.
After Zapata leaves, Reade confronts Keaton about forcing Zapata to keep the mission from them, and Keaton tells him he knew he was the only person who could stop Zapata from doing the mission. As they play the board game, Patterson admits it’s a good game and Rich gives her a better version of her figure. Patterson sees that they got access to the security camera outside the Sandstorm safehouse and watch as a mysterious figure enters the building just before the FBI raided it.
