One year ago, Michael Ganzman (Michael Drayer) tells Kira Evans (Gloria Reuben) and Bob Drabkin (Andrew Rogers) that Joseph Baxter (Robert Poletick) is shutting down the program. He explains that Baxter wants a demonstration, but Kira warns him that the experiment can’t be made public. Drabkin suggests they give Baxter a demonstration, and the plane Baxter is on starts shaking and the windows shatter after Baxter’s nose starts bleeding.

In the present, Avery (Kristina Reyes) tells Jane Doe (Jaimie Alexander) that she struggles with seeing her father, Drabkin, as a monster. Jane tries to show her empathy, but Avery points out their experiences are different. Avery laments they’re nowhere close to catching Crawford, but Jane argues that Roman (Luke Mitchell) is desperate and promises they will catch him and Crawford. Avery wishes it would happen soon, as her constant FBI bodyguards tire her.

Patterson (Ashley Johnson) shows Edgar Reade (Rob Brown) the plot of land that Crawford purchased. She comments that the land has nothing, and Reade suggests that he plans to build something there. Patterson gets an alert on one of the tattoo cases, and figures that something outside of Roman’s control caused it. In Germany, Roman gets notification of the tattoo alert and Blake Crawford (Tori Anderson) asks if it’s Crawford. Roman tells her that he needs to go to New York, but won’t explain why. She questions why he’s keeping it from her, insisting that she shouldn’t be left in the dark. He tells her that he’ll just be in meetings, and she says goodbye.

Patterson shows the team the beetle tattoo, which is comprised of two different species. She shows them that the picture is on the cover of a new book threatening to expose military secrets. Tasha Zapata (Audrey Esparza) shares details on the book’s author, Daschelle Watkins (Christopher Fitzgerald). They bring in Watkins for questioning, and Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) asks him about his book. Watkins is worried they are trying to shut down the publishing, but Reade explains that their task force investigates corruption. Excited by the prospect of the truth being brought to light, Watkins explains that beetle is a symbol for a secret weapons program and is responsible for Baxter’s assassination. Reade argues that Baxter’s death was an accident, but Watkins doesn’t believe it.

Weller asks how he knows about this, and Watkins explains that he got classified documents from a hacker group. Watkins explains that there are gaps, but reading between the lines helped him draw his conclusions. He explains that someone wealthy and powerful got their hands on the weapon, and that he needs to show, not tell the weapon’s capabilities. Reade promises to get a copy of his book, and Watkins warns them that everyone in the building is a potential target if they investigate.

Reade and Weller hand Watkins the book and ask him to explain. They tell him they have no time to read, and Watkins shows them a picture of Ganzman. He tells them everything is there, but Weller points out that the documents in the book have redacted sections. Watkins tells them to read between the lines, and Weller asks why he won’t answer. He tells them he doesn’t want them to think he’s crazy, and tells them the weapon is a mind-control device.

Patterson tells the team that Watkins is a conspiracy theorist, but the rest of the team decides to keep pursuing the lead.  Reade suggests that they look for Ganzman, but Patterson tells him that she can’t find any trace of him. He tells her to look through Watkins’ files, but Patterson complains about the lack of organization. Reade tells her to have Watkins help her make sense of the documents, but Patterson isn’t convinced that there’s anything worth making sense of.

Jane expresses her concerns about Avery feeling like a prisoner to Weller. He reminds her that Roman just tried to kill all of them, and Jane suggests they can protect her if she moves in with them. Weller agrees, but reminds her it’s Avery’s decision. Patterson gets impatient with Watkins as they look through his files, and questions why his documents on Ganzman are spread out. Watkins tells her that he doesn’t want anyone looking at them, and Patterson points out they’re the ones looking. Patterson tells him that there’s no evidence of mind control, but Watkins insists it’s there. He plays her a recording of Baxter’s death, and asks if she can hear the warbling sound. She insists it’s just static, and finds a list of names in the files that Watkins explains are potential suspects.

Patterson expresses her frustration with having to work with a lunatic, but shows the team evidence that one of the names on Watkins’ list, Surjik Fells (Alex Morf), shows up in their database. As Fells is being transferred from prison, the vehicle is stopped and Roman kidnaps him. Zapata shows them security footage, and they speculate that Roman is sabotaging them. Roman pulls Fells out of his trunk, and demands to know where Ganzman is. Fells claims he doesn’t know, and Roman kicks him. He continues to claim he doesn’t know anything, and Roman points a gun at his head. Roman gets a call from Blake and orders Fells to stay silent as he takes the call. He lies that he’s at the hotel, and Blake tells him she’s in New York. Roman hangs up, and tells Fells that the interruption bought him more time before stuffing him back in the trunk.

Reade tells the team he’s ordered a full manhunt for Ganzman, and Reade asks them to bring in the executives of the military contractor involved with the project. Roman puts Fells in the hotel’s bathtub and dunks his head underwater every time he doesn’t give Ganzman’s location. Blake arrives and Roman orders Fells to be quiet before he greets her by stepping out of the bathroom in just a towel. He pretends that he was going to take a shower and asks what she’s doing there. She tells him she’s want to finish their earlier conversation, and he tells her that they’ll talk after his shower.

Roman tells Fells that they’re both out of time, as he demands Ganzman’s location. After plunging him underwater a few times, Fells gives Roman two possible locations. Roman drowns him and goes downstairs where Blake tells him she’s not comfortable with him keeping secrets from her. He admits he needs to be more open with her and suggests they go on a romantic trip upstate. She asks about his meetings, and he tells her they can keep this secret from Crawford. Roman sends a text requesting a cleanup in the room and leaves with Blake.

Patterson tells Zapata and Reade that she’s sent a helicopter to Ganzman’s childhood cabin. She communicates with the pilot, and speculates on what the weapon could be; ignoring Watkins’ insistence it’s mind control. The pilot informs Patterson that something is wrong, and Patterson realizes Watkins was right about the warbling noise. They lose contact with the team, and Patterson realizes that the weapon is making the pilot’s brain hemorrhage instead of mind control.

Watkins attempts to leave, blaming himself for the pilot’s death and insisting he’s crazy. Patterson tells him that he unlocked a major conspiracy, but that he drew the wrong conclusion about the weapon. She explains how the weapon works scientifically, and that the only way to stop it is to find Ganzman. Patterson tells him that she needs his help to look through his research, and he assesses it’s because his handwriting is terrible. Weller questions Camille Moon (Kathleen McNenny), who threatens the FBI with a lawsuit. He tells her that Ganzman just killed four agents, and she replies that Ganzman was laid off a year ago. However, Weller shows her record that her company is still paying Ganzman and she requests a lawyer.

Roman and Blake arrive at their room, and hear sirens outside. He assures her that the FBI isn’t looking for them, and Roman turns on the TV to see news footage of the helicopter crash. He starts freaking out, and Blake questions why his enthusiasm for the trip has changed. Roman imagines himself telling her the truth about his identity and original mission. Despite his insistence that his feelings for her are real, she stabs him. Roman snaps back to reality, and lies that he was in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan before insisting they continue with the trip.

Weller tells the team that every executive requested counsel, and Patterson reports that Camille knew Drabkin from Watkins’ copies of every employee’s phone records. Weller suggests they bring Avery in, and Jane comes up with an idea. Weller approaches Camille and tells her that they have someone willing to cooperate. He shows her footage of Jane staging an interrogation with Avery, where she admits that she knows of Camille’s involvement through a journal Drabkin kept. Jane compliments Avery on her convincing performance, and they watch as Camille details her business with Drabkin and tells Weller that she can locate Ganzman.

Camille calls Ganzman, who tells her he’s in trouble. She promises to come to him and he tells her to meet at the warehouse where the weapon is stored. Roman leaves the hotel in the middle of the night and drives to the warehouse. Patterson suggests that they take an armored vehicle to lessen the weapon’s effect, but that she’s not entirely sure it will work. Roman breaks into the gate surrounding the warehouse, and Ganzman gets alerted of the approaching vehicle.

Ganzman calls Camille as she sits in custody with Reade, and she tells him she’s in the vehicle. He asks her to step out to prove it’s her, but she tells him that she doesn’t want to. Ganzman insists that she identify herself, but she tells him to stop being paranoid. Ganzman targets the truck with the weapon and Jane, Weller, and Zapata’s noses start bleeding as the windows shatter. They climb out of the car as the sonic waves hit them, and Weller insists they’ll be fine as long at the truck’s between them.

Patterson warns Weller that they won’t survive approaching the warehouse, and Weller decides to send the truck into the warehouse to smash the machine. Once the machine is broken, they step into the warehouse and look for Ganzman. Roman finds Ganzman first and disarms him before telling him he’s with Crawford. He asks Ganzman if the weapon can be traced back to Crawford, and kills Ganzman when he confirms he’s the only one who knows of Crawford’s involvement.

Weller finds Ganzman’s body, and reports that Roman’s there. Jane finds herself in the same room as Roman and they shoot at each other. She tells him that he’s not getting out of there and they continue to shoot at each other. Roman implies that she doesn’t really want to kill him, as killing him would be killing a part of herself. Jane replies that he’s a monster that needs to be put down, but Roman escapes as Jane runs out of bullets. She chases after him, and tells Weller and Zapata that they have to find him.

Roman goes back to hotel room, and Blake asks where he’s been. He tells her he went for a drive, and suggests that they run away together. She likes the idea, but tells her that she can’t leave her life behind. Blake tells him that she can’t help him if he shuts her out and asks what he wants to run away from. He tells her that he wants to run away from his past, as it’s always chasing him. She urges him to move forward, and he tells her that she’s his future. Blake tells him he’s her future too, and reminds him that soldiers stay and fight.

The team thanks Watkins for his help, and Patterson tells him he can’t tell anyone about what happened. He’s excited to be part of a cover-up, and Jane and Weller tell Avery what happened. Avery is frustrated that they haven’t brought down Crawford, but they point out that a dangerous weapon is out of his hands. They propose that she move in with them, and she accepts. Zapata asks Patterson if she wants help, but she rejects it. Patterson starts getting hits on every single tattoo, and realizes that Roman is flooding the system to make their system unusable.
