Bones – The Final Chapter: The Grief and the Girl
By: Paige Zinaman
Old fashioned soda in the fridge caused Brennan (Emily Deschanel) to get upset with Booth (David Boreanaz) because that is what Max (Ryan O’Neal) would always drink. Booth tells Brennan that he loves her and that she is not alone while saying to just tell him what she needs. Booth’s phone goes off and when he refuses to get it Brennan grabs it and starts rattling off details of the case they have. A body that was washed up on the beach in Canada with a U.S. passport. Booth tells Brennan that he bought the soda for the kids, which causes Brennan to say that the remains are at the Jeffersonian.
Clark (Eugene Byrd) is helping Cam (Tamara Taylor) and Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) with the identity of their victim who was from North Carolina. As they are going over the body, Angela (Michaela Conlin) comes in and warns them that Brennan was on her way up. They are very confused as to how she found out when Angela says that the lab is the only place she wants to be at the moment. Meanwhile at the FBI building, Aubrey (John Boyd) shows Booth a piece of paper that was with the victim when she was killed. He tells Booth that he sent it to Angela to see what she can get from it. Aubrey asks Booth how Brennan is doing to which Booth says she’s a lot tougher than she should be. Aubrey tells Booth there was nothing he could have done.
Angela is looking at the picture Aubrey sent to her when Brennan walks in. Brennan tells her that Cam said she had something for her when Angela just stops and hugs Brennan and asks how she’s doing. Brennan tells her that everyone keeps asking her that question and that she really doesn’t know how to answer it. Angela tells her what she found looks like a picture of a painting. as they are examining the photograph Sully (Eddie McClintock) comes in with Cam causing Brennan to look relieved and she hugs him. Cam and Angela give them a minute and they meet up Clark who starts questioning them about the dude hooking up with Brennan. They tell him that Sully is the only person besides Booth who ever stood a chance with Brennan. The trio watch on as Brennan and Sully laugh and catch up and hug again.
Sully and Brennan catch up and she shows him pictures of Christine and Hank when she asks what he doing there. Sully tells her that he heard what happened to her dad and wanted to check on her. Brennan gives him a very Brennan compliment by saying he’s aged which he just says thank you and they go onto the topic of the woman he was dating and about how she was young. Clark and Cam are examining the remains more when Clark starts asking Cam about Sully. Cam says that she didn’t take him for a work gossip type of guy and he says he’s not. Clark tells her that Brennan is in a vulnerable right now and that the timing of Sully is very convenient. Hodgins tells him that Sully is not a predator. He tells Clark and Cam that what he’s found is nothing that will lead them to the murder weapon. Cam finds something imbedded and Clark says it looks like a bone. Hodgins tells Cam that there looks to be a string tied around the body.
Sully and Brennan go to the FBI where Sully fills Booth in on his life and how he makes sandwiches now and that he named one after him. Aubrey walks up to them and tells Booth that the victim’s sister Tess (Lindsey Haun) is there and introduces himself to Sully. When Booth tells him they have to go Sully asks about dinner the next night on him and Brennan says yes, much to the curiosity of Booth. Booth shows Tess the water damaged picture and asks if she’s seen it before. Tess tells Booth and Brennan that it looks like a painting her grandmother had. When asked if she knew why Sarah would carry around a picture of it Tess says no and that she has a husband and a baby on the way so she wonders why it feels like she doesn’t have a family anymore.
Angela shows Aubrey what she’s found about the painting picture and discovered that it’s a painting that Tess and Sarah’s grandmother painted herself called “Secret Harbor.” Aubrey tells Angela that he just met Sully and asks if he’s imagining it or if there is history between Brennan and Sully. Angela closes the door and tells Aubrey to tell her everything. Brennan goes to Booth who is in his office with his feet up on the desk telling him she just got off the phone with Clark who told them she was wearing an animal bone. Brennan asks if he’s heard back from the state department and they want the FBI’s full involvement. Brennan seems too happy when she asks when he leaves. Booth informs Brennan that he’s not going because he wants to be there for her when she buries her dad, but she tells Booth that the answer to his question regarding what he can do she tells him she thinks it will be good if she’s alone for a few days. Booth tells her that if she wants him to go. She says that he’ll go to Canada and she walks out of his office.
Hodgins tells Cam that the bone they found belongs to a Caribou. That impresses him until she informs him she knew about it from the picture he still had on the screen. Clark comes in telling them that the bone they found was a needle and it’s called “naw binding,” an ancient version of knitting used by Vikings. Booth and Aubrey arrive in Canada and meet Gilda Sandling (Miranda Frigon), an RMP Officer. Gilda tells them that they may have a witness so one of them could use the rental car to go interview while the other one goes along with her on the coastal roads to find a match to the picture they sent. Gilda tells them the witness is a short-term rental owner who said Sarah was a tenant. She explains that the woman is a local celeb for her jerky she makes which causes Aubrey to volunteer with speak with her.
Back at the Jeffersonian Clark and Brennan are going over the bones when Brennan gives Clark her approval to do an investigation of the Viking settlement. Aubrey talks to Gretchen Crockett (Dale Raoul) who tells him she can ship her jerky everywhere and he tells her that there could be some at the crime scene. She says she saw Sarah last Tuesday night when a man drove Sarah home and she said he sounded very threatening so she wrote down his license plate number just in case. Aubrey tells Booth the man they are looking for name is Adam Hitchcock (Tom Degnan) who is an American. Gilda tells them that he and his father are in town to scout a sight for them to build their new luxury resort. Gilda tells Booth that Adam’s offices are near them so they should go see if he wants to talk.
At the marina Booth and Gilda talk to Adam about Sarah. He admits he knew her. Gilda tells him that she was in his car and shows up dead two days later. He tells them that he met Sarah in a bar and she said she was looking for a cove so he drove her around looking for it. Gilda asks why and he says she said she would regret turning him down. Booth asks a smug Adam about his old college classmate that accused him of sexual assault. Adam tells him that it was settled, which irks Booth into a rant about how Adam’s daddy paid it off and asks about the reports of contractors who get blackmailed if they don’t do what Adam tells them to do. Gilda steps in and pulls Booth.
Brennan and Sully have dinner and rehash the past when Sully asks about her dad saying he’d be happy to listen. Brennan opens up about Max which makes her emotional and saying that he made it hard for her to trust another man but he loved her. She tells him that she doesn’t know why she’s crying with him when Booth has been the one there and wants to know why she’s letting him in when Booth feels so far away from her. Sully tells her grief it does things and mixes things up, they talk about how his partner died and how he ran away from the woman he really loved. When she asked why he didn’t come back he said that he felt that he knew where it was going and that if he stayed away he could think about how he was her “One that got away.” He tells her she will get through it and to give it time because Booth isn’t going anywhere. Cam tells Brennan she doesn’t think she was killed by a gun shot, as Brennan looks it over she discovers that it was an arrow that killed Sarah and that’s how the jerky would have gotten onto the victim’s body and tells Cam she should tell Booth which throws Cam for a moment. Hodgins gets the results back from the fracture Clark wanted discovering Sarah must have fallen off a cliff where she landed on rocks.
Angela shows Cam information on Tess and Sarah’s grandmother and she informs Cam that Sarah was looking for Grandma Stella’s history. Gilda and Aubrey meet with Kathleen (A Leslie Kies), the daughter of Rick who owns the sporting goods store. She pulls out the arrows and which one she thinks they are looking for. Rick (Greg Evigan) told them that he took Adam out and he wanted Caribou. Then, Rick says he knows the place in the picture. Booth goes to ask questions when a man, Doug (Wolfgang Bodison), shoots an arrow at him. As they ask Doug questions Lucy (Wylie Small) comes running out asking what’s happening when she notices Doug in handcuffs. Lucy notices Sarah and asked if something happened to her. Clark calls for Brennan when he notices staining. Angela comes in to help determine what caused the injuries. Angela and Brennan talk. She asks about the plans for Max’s funeral and tells Brennan she should talk to Booth and that she can share some of this with him. Brennan says maybe she doesn’t want to because she will start to worry and how she doesn’t want to worry about anyone right then.
Lucy tells Aubrey and Gilda about how she met Sarah and how they talked about Sarah’s grandma, Lucy’s mother and old stories. Gilda tells Lucy there’s a chance her mother and Sarah’s grandma were sisters. Clark and Angela look over the pictures Aubrey sent when he runs out yelling for Hodgins. Meanwhile Booth, Aubrey and Gilda found the murder site with a jerky bag with fingerprints. Cam comes in to ask Hodgins and Clark if they found something because they found Vikings. The prints were a match to Kathleen. Brennan discovers someone else was with Kathleen and it pointed back to Adam Hitchcock.
Booth arrives home with a hug from Brennan who says she’s glad he’s back They talk about Sully and how without him she wouldn’t be ready for them. She tells Booth she loves him. At Max’s funeral Brennan reads the eulogy and how Max gave his life for her children. It is a very beautiful moment of closer for Brennan and her father.
