Interviews
Brenzy – brunch
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I’d describe my music as being groovy, energetic and a little bit sensual.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I have so many, but to name a few: Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars and Ariana Grande.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “brunch” and the process you shared with Albert Posis to write it.
A) The song is just about wanting to go out to brunch with your girlfriends! I don’t go out much, so this song was kind of my fantasy of doing that. Albert, Jesse [Barrera], Patrick [Hizon] and I came into the studio wanting to write something fun and lighthearted and I immediately knew what concept that would match the track that we built. Brunch!
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think just the element of wanting to go out and have fun with your friends! The song also just feels good, and I think a lot of my listeners enjoy that.
Q) What is it about brunch that makes it such a special meal for you?
A) I love breakfast food and I don’t like waking up early. Brunch includes breakfast food and there’s no requirement to wake up too early!
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) The video includes some fun brunch activities and having fun with friends, which is what the song is about! The video has some fun twists to it other than just a video of me and my friends at brunch, so I’m excited for everyone to see.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) I usually need concepts or lyrics before I can add music. Other times I’ll hear a track and look through my notes to find a lyric or concept that matches the mood of the track. I like for the sonic elements of a song to capture the same feeling of the lyric or concept.
Q) Patrick Hizon and Jesse Barrera lent a hand with production on the song “brunch,” but how much of a say do you have in the production of your music?
A) That was entirely their doing! They’re incredible at what they do. I’ll pitch in and say I like or dislike a certain sound or chords or maybe make a production suggestion, but I wouldn’t call myself a producer. Maybe one day! But they make all the magic on the production side.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) I’m still deciding on my rollouts for my music this year, but it definitely looks like an EP will be coming soon.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) I recently got to play at Hotel Café and that was amazing. The crowd was great and there’s just great energy in that room. My dad and I used to talk about me playing Hotel Café one day and he was actually in town to see me perform there for the first time. It was really special to me.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) There are so many artists that I’d love to collab with, but right now my number one is Silk Sonic.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Lucky Daye’s new album Candy Drip is amazing. He puts his own twist on funk and soul, and he just takes you into his own world on that album. He definitely did his thing on Candy Drip.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) Fans want to know who you are! Social media has given artists an opportunity to present themselves as actual people and develop personal relationships with fans and I really think it’s one of the most important tools for an artist to use today.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Every ounce of support means the absolute world to me, and I send out a huge “thank you” and so much love to every person who supports me and my music.
