Interviews
Brett Will – Dominoes
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) My sound is a fusion of hip-hop and R&B, blending smooth melodies with hard-hitting beats. I aim to create music that resonates emotionally while also getting people moving while aiming to create a nostalgic feel for the listener. I also am a MAJOR R&B fan personally so a lot of that comes from that influence.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I’m influenced by artists like Drake, Juicy J, Busta Rhymes, Young Jeezy, T.I., Trey Songz, Usher and J. Cole. Each of these artists has shaped my musical identity in different ways.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Dominoes.”
A) “Dominoes” is about the unpredictable nature of life and how our choices can have a cascading effect—like falling dominoes. It captures both the highs and lows and the importance of resilience. Also just feeling good, confident and willing to show those kind of personality traits.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) Fans connect to “Dominoes” because it tells a relatable story of facing challenges and overcoming them. The emotional honesty in the lyrics resonates with listeners who have experienced similar struggles. And at the same time, they can feel the positive energy and just a sprinkle of cockiness / arrogance but NOT TOO much. [laughs]
Q) What is your songwriting process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) My songwriting process is almost always the same. It doesn’t matter which genre I’m working on – if I’m working on record for myself or for another artist – I’m always going to have the instrumental and production playing before I start writing. Obviously, I have written without music before, but it just has never the same. I really like to write with my flows hopping and changing with the beat it just makes for a better process. Can I do the other way? Yes, but I enjoy listening to the production first just really give me that feel.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I’m heavily involved in the production process. I love collaborating with producers but also contribute my ideas to shape the sound and feel of my tracks.
Q) “Dominoes” following “Poppin’,” will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) To be fully honest, I’m not 100% sure exactly what I’m doing yet. I recently signed a publishing deal with a label in Nashville. So, I’m not exactly sure what the plans are for the future in terms of my solo stuff but right now I’ve literally just been releasing single after single. I learned a couple of things from a friend of mine. He’s an artist Russ I’m sure you guys have heard of them. He was the one that kind of told me that as you’re an up-and-coming artist and you’re building your building your streaming, etc. you’re better off releasing singles because everybody is willing to listen to one song from a new artist per say. Now will that same person sit and listen to an entire album or an EP probably not so you’ll end up seeing the first two to three songs on the project with great streaming numbers and it’s gonna tail off from there no matter how good the actual music. That being said, I’m constantly working on music. I have over two thousand songs recorded that span across fifteen different genres that includes folk, country, rock R&B, pop and blues just to name a few. So, to really answer your question I don’t want to give any falls information out right now, but definitely keep an eye on me as I will be making moves.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations significant to you?
A) That’s a great question. Recently I had been doing a lot of performances. I’ve just been focusing on the music and the songwriting aspect of things as I’m doing a lot of writing for major labels and other artists. But in the past, I’ve done some major shows big touring with Lil Wayne, Ludacris, 36 Mafia, Young Jeezy, Machine Gun Kelly, Wu-Tang Clan, Busta Rhymes, Lloyd Banks and Tony Ayo just name a few. But for sure I’ve always enjoyed the energy of the crowds in the United States over where I’m from in Canada. So, I had to pick one city or one location I would say anywhere in Atlanta anywhere in Florida/Alabama – basically the Southeast just are great, great people and they really enjoy their music.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Drake, The Weeknd, Juicy J, TI, Young Jeezy, J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar would be my top ones.
Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Right now, I’m listening to a lot of Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, Kane Brown and Sam Hunt. Mainly because I signed my record deal in Nashville and for the most part, I’m gonna be right in country/hip-hop music, so I’m just trying to really get into the biggest artist in that genre. You can throw Shaboozey in there, too.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I just want to express my gratitude to all my fans and supporters. Your belief in my music fuels my passion and drives me to create. I can’t wait to share more of my journey with you all!
