Interviews
Brooke Sorenson – Modern Family
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) “Modern Family” is the most recent thing I have been working on. It’s amazing to be able to work with so many award winning cast members. They are so funny and so amazing! I am also reoccurring as Stephanie on “Mighty Med” and Madison on “The Thundermans.”
Q) What is an upcoming storyline for “Modern Family” that you can tease about?
A) I can’t say much, but there is a storyline that hopefully will be continued between Luke and my character Tammy. Luke kind of takes a liking to my character, but I’m kind of your stereotypical teenager. I’m always turning him down and telling him to go away. In the end of my last episode, Luke plays hard to get and she likes that a little bit. Hopefully, you will actually see that going somewhere in upcoming episodes.
Q) “Modern Family” is a comedic show. Is comedic timing something you have studied?
A) Comedy to me is my main thing! I really want to get into drama and some films, but comedy comes the most naturally to me. “Modern Family” is a different kind of comedy, but it is awesome! That is what comes more naturally to me, but I want to get into drama and other things as well.
Q) What have you taken away from your time working on the show?
A) I’m really thankful to work on different shows, not just one. I am able to experience different directors, different cast members and different formats. “Modern Family” is single camera and Disney is multi-camera. Being able to have different experiences on so many shows is really helping me. I’m just learning so much and having so much fun.
Q) What is it like playing opposite Nolan Gould?
A) He’s a really sweet boy and we have so much fun. He’s so funny! They are all so funny! They make me laugh on and off screen. My dad is a huge fan of “Modern Family,” so when I told him I got the show he had tears in his eyes! He was like, “Oh my gosh! No way!” I always hearing him watching my episodes over and over again. Nolan is awesome and great to work with. They are all really welcoming!
Q) What has been your most memorable moment from filming your shows?
A) My last episode of “Modern Family” I had to be in three bikinis! That was an interesting experience to be in front of a bunch of people in a bikini. It was very memorable! My favorite moment from being on any show would an episode of “The Thundermans” when I got slimed! Nickelodeon has made being slimed becoming a part of their family. I was super excited to be slimed! The director said, “No matter what you do, just don’t say a bad word and don’t laugh!” I was nervous because I only had one try! It was my favorite moment out of all of the shows. Good thing I reacted the way I was supposed to and didn’t laugh! I had a scene after getting slimed, too. You would think they would do the sliming last, but they did it where I had a scene afterwards. So, I had to shower and then they had to get me decent again. That was really memorable and really fun!
Q) When you take on a role, do you tend to add anything to your characters or stick to the script?
A) I always try and bring an essence and put my own spin on it. What I love about “Modern Family” is that sometimes they will improv. They don’t always stick to the script. At the end of the scene, they will kind of try and improv a little bit. That’s fun to be able to bring your own words to a scene. That’s really cool and different because you don’t really do that with Disney.
Q) Your father on “Modern Family” is played by Steve Zahn. Has he imparted any acting wisdom to you?
A) Steve Zahn is the funniest man I have ever met in my life! I’ve never met anyone funnier than him. He makes me laugh until I can’t even breath. When we have the table read, people go crazy over him! He doesn’t have to even say anything and he is a funny guy. He is perfect in his role on “Modern Family.” He’s my dream fake dad to play on the show and so is Andrea Anders who plays my mom. They are both so funny on and off screen! He is from Kentucky and I’m from North Carolina so we kind of have that in common. He gave me some good advice. We talked a lot and he is really cool.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) It’s super important for me to stay connected with my fans through social media. Especially on Instagram, the fans make these amazing edits of my shows. I just love to get on there and reply to what they are saying. They ask me questions about acting and I love being able to connect with them.
Q) Is there anything else you want us to be sure to share with fans?
A) I have a new single coming out called “Three Days” and it should be coming out very, very soon. I’m really excited! If you keep up with me through Twitter and Instagram, I’ll be releasing it very soon. Keep checking on my social media accounts because I am so excited for it to come out! This song is a very different vibe from my other ones. It’s kind of like Taylor Swift’s music. It’s about a girl who gets broken up with and all her girlfriends empower her to think she doesn’t need him and that she’ll get over him in three days. That is what I love most about the song. It’s really empowering for girls and I hope everyone really likes it.
