Brother Elsey – Wrong Things
By: Jennifer Vintzileos
Q) How would you best describe your sound?
A) Our sound is fickle, best described as a lovechild of Mumford and Sons and Kings of Leon with Wilco and Bruce Springsteen as the uncles. We’ve dabbled in a lot of different genres, and I think that adds to the diversity.
Q) Who are your Top 3 musical influences?
A) The Eagles, John Prine, Jack White
Q) Tell us the story behind your latest single “Wrong Things.”
A) This song is a product of a little self-sabotage in the midst of the rowdy nature of some early-twenties antics. It’s a song about doing the wrong things long enough to show you the right way out.
Q) Since its release, what has been the reaction from fans and listeners to the new single?
A) It’s been really great so far. We know this song is gonna have a long life and will resonate with new fans as much as it resonates with our existing ones.
Q) “Wrong Things” is your fourth single release this year, along with “Blameless Blue,” “Red Tape” and “Bolt Cutter Eyes,” all leading up to your self-titled album due out next year. Aside from these singles, what are some themes you will be exploring on the new album?
A) This record is a sort of anthology of our twenties and the journey it is to navigate and grow out of them. It almost feels like a bookend of sorts, it dances around personal experiences in love and joy and death and sorry and angst while keeping it relatable.
Q) Which previous song was your favorite to write and record for Brother Elsey?
A) I think “Dreamer” is the collective favorite of the crew – the song just came together so perfectly in the studio, and it feels like a true depiction of who we are. It kind of showcases what makes us unique and the type of music that we love to create.
Q) In addition to a new album, you’re also set to tour this month and next in the US. Which stop has been a favorite of yours to perform at and which one are you most looking forward to playing for the first time?
A) I think the obvious choices are Detroit and Nashville – they’re both our sort of homes and it’s gonna feel really nice playing for all the people we love so much, but Columbus has become a very fun place for us. We have a really nice bunch of people that come and see us play and it feels like it’s really picking up some speed. Toronto is our second home as well. It’ll feel so good getting back north in the fall.
Q) Who would you love to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Noah Kahan seems to really love to collaborate lately so why not? That would be a dream. Medium Build would be crazy. I think us and Sam Fender would make some really amazing music together. Maybe a feature on the next Zach Bryan record? All would be insane.
Q) Which artists have you been listening to on repeat these days?
A) An English band called Wunderhorse is on repeat 24/7 right now. Also loving Sam Fender, IDLES and a ton of Medium Build as well.
Q) What would you like to say to your fans and supporters of your music?
A) Just more thank you’s than one person is capable of saying. It’s hard for it not to sound cliche, but there’s a reason it is. These people make it all worth it. It’s crazy to us that anyone cares enough to drive/buy/listen/attend at all because we’re just doing our thing. No form of thank you would ever do the trick. They’re a part of something special and something that’s just getting started.
