Bunheads – We Need A Revival!
By: Taylor Gates
Oh, “Bunheads.” You were taken from us much too soon. Since you took your final bow off our televisions three years ago, not only have I never stopped trying to memorize Sasha’s fierce “Istanbul” dance, but I have also never stopped hoping that someday you would be revived and given the proper run you always deserved. I think that day has finally come. There has never been and will never be a more perfect time to give “Bunheads” another go. Here’s why:
1) The cast is more popular than ever. Sutton Foster’s fan base has grown astronomically since last summer when her smash hit show “Younger” premiered. Foster plays the lead role of Liza Miller in the TV Land comedy, a show about a 40-year-old fronting as a 26-year-old to get a job in the publishing industry. Fans of Liza would instantly fall in love with Michelle Simms, an equally flawed but lovable protagonist. The younger actresses have been making waves as well. Julia Goldani Telles’ (Sasha) role on “The Affair” has been turning heads, Bailey de Young (Ginny) has stayed in the young adult entertainment vein by frequently appearing on MTV’s show “Faking It” and Emma Dumont (Melanie) has a large part in the critically acclaimed David Duchovny series “Aquarius.” Consistently flawless, Liza Weil (crazy, uptight Millie) appears alongside Viola Davis on the Emmy-winning series “How to Get Away with Murder” and is sure to rake in some viewers as well.
2) “Gilmore Girls” is being revived. In addition to “Younger,” Sutton Foster will also be appearing in the “Gilmore Girls” revival, which means it’s a sure bet that even more people will fall for her irresistible charm and talent.
There will also be new fans of creator Amy Sherman-Palladino due to this revival so it would make sense to capitalize on the hype by resurrecting another project shorty after.
3) The whole world has Hamilton fever. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s latest musical has made it so song, dance and fast-talking are all very in right now—three elements “Bunheads” had mastered from day one. Hamilton’s success across a wide array of diverse groups also proves that something that might originally be written off as a niche show can transcend solely the obvious audience and appeal to the masses as well.
4) There are so many unresolved cliffhangers. GINNY’S BANANA’S NAME WAS FRANKIE. I watch the final scene that perpetually left Ginny and Michelle on that bench more than I care to admit and the amount I think about what would have happened next is frankly embarrassing. There are so many unanswered questions and so much potential for these characters. Did Michelle ever get a callback? Did Melanie continue to blossom into the roller derby star she was bound to be? What happened with Sasha and Roman? Did too sweet, too pure for this world Boo (Kaitlyn Jenkins) ever become the ballet queen she always deserved to be? Did Truly’s (Stacey Oristano) clothes ever make it down the runway at Paris fashion week? These are all things I NEED to know.
5) Everybody needs “Bunheads” in their life. Let’s face it, this show was a diamond in the rough and never should have been cancelled in the first place. It had a wit, heart and unique charm any other show has yet to match. Despite its critical acclaim, it never grew into the success it should have been. Timing and premature cancellation are surely to blame, which is why “Bunheads” should be given another chance. And there’s no time like the present!
