Interviews
Cami Petyn – Tired
By: Alejandra Gil M
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I usually describe it as “jazzy alt-pop with some darkness to it.”
Q) Your single “Tired” released on all platforms Friday, April 2nd. What was the writing process like for the song? Did you have the lyrics or the music first?
A) My writing process differs for each song, but for this one the lyrics came first. I was quite literally thinking about how damn tired I was of feeling so much at the time, which directly translated into the first lyrics that I wrote down. I had been feeling insecure and exhausted for so long that once I put pen to paper, the rest of the song just came pouring out of me in one sitting. It was pretty mystical & therapeutic.
Q) I had the opportunity to listen to the son and it is so easy to hear the influences from both modern pop and old-school jazz creating a funky atmosphere. What do you hope fans take away from it?
A) Yuuup, I’m super inspired by both modern pop and jazz! But I hope listeners come away from this song thinking, “Damn, everybody really does feel insecure and if Cami can decide she’s putting her foot down, maybe I can too.”
Q) The lyrics talk about the frustration of feeling insecure, which undoubtedly many of us can relate to. Tell us why it was important to you to write this song.
A) When I wrote this song, I had been in a negative spiral for months, over-analyzing and judging myself. Until one day I realized, “Wait…I don’t HAVE to be much of a dick to myself. Actually, I’m really freaking over it.” So, I decided that day that I’m tired and done with being constantly insecure and the first step for me was writing “Tired.”
Q) The music video for “Tired” will also be released with the song. How much were you involved on the creative process for it?
A) I’m extremely involved in all my music videos. When I originally came to my director with “Tired,” I wrote him a six and a half page PDF of all the details/narrative I wanted in the video lol and we brainstormed together for weeks to figure out how to make it happen. I absolutely love the music video process.
Q) Your music also touches on topics that matter deeply to you like mental health, self-acceptance and growth. How have you been dealing with them through the pandemic?
A) Ah man, the pandemic definitely made dealing with these things more of a challenge than I (or anybody) expected. Songwriting, exercise and therapy are a few things that have helped me stay (relatively) sane though
Q) With concerts currently on hold, what do you miss most about live performances?
A) All of it. I don’t think there’s anything I miss more than live performances, ugh.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Oh man, I’m currently super into Little Simz and Audrey Nuna. They are both epic female rappers that I’d love to collaborate with one day. Or Anderson.Paak, that would be a dream.
Q) Are there any new artists that you´ve been listening to on lockdown?
A) Hayley Williams’ first solo album Petals For Armor got me through a lot of lockdown.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) Absolutely.
Q) What would you like to say to fans and supporters of you and your music?
A) Holy shit I love you. Thank you for believing in me. This is just the beginning.
