Interviews
Camryn – Machines
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) My sound is a mix of pop and rock. I take my favorite elements in both genres and mash them together to create a modern, Camryn version.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I listen to Paramore, Panic At The Disco, Awolnation, Melanie Martinez and a variety of deep house songs I find on Soundcloud or Spotify. I also dip into classic and alternative rock.
Q) What is the songwriting process like for you? Do you need music before you create the lyrics?
A) Being in the studio is quite the creative process. I like to have a rough track before I can write because, for me, it’s not just about the lyrics or just the music. It’s about everything combined. If one of those elements are off, then the whole song won’t turn out how I want it to. Once I hear the music, the lyrics and melody just flow right out of me. Songwriting is my therapy!
Q) How did you come to work with Nylon to release the video of your single “Machines?”
A) As I’ve gotten older, my fans have gotten older as well. Nylon was the perfect place to reach my fans and, hopefully, gain some new ones!
Q) How does the music video play into the message of the song?
A) The lyric video was my way of making lyrics on a screen more creative and interesting so that fans could really get into the song more and, hopefully, have all the lyrics memorized by the time I’m performing it on stage! I added the performance elements to make the video more personal. The official music video is based on the novel 1984 by George Orwell. I think that a revolution and the development of a revolution really ties in with the concept behind “Machines,” which is unapologetically going after what you believe in with such force and determination that you won’t let anything get in your way!
Q) What do you think it is about your new song “Machines” that fans are really connecting to?
A) When I first heard the finished song I felt empowered and I wanted to take over the world like a machine and that’s how I hope people are connecting to it. Whether it’s a test, an audition or a fun plan for the night, I want people to feel empowered and strong like they can do whatever they want.
Q) How much of a hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I am a very hands-on artist. I like to be heavily involved in every aspect of my career, especially in the production of my music. For example, I sent “Machines” back over a dozen times to my producers to perfect every last detail. I think they got a little sick of me after the 6th time! [laughs]
Q) What can fans expect from a live Camryn performance?
A) An energetic fire ball! [laughs] I get a rush of adrenaline and take off like I’ve had thirty energy drinks! Fans can expect to see a kick ass show with great music!!
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I would love to work with Beyoncé on a song! Her song “Pretty Hurts” has so much grit, yet maintains an elegant melody that I love. I admire her and think she is a phenomenal businesswoman and artist.
Q) What can fans do to help promote your music?
A) Fans can go buy my single “Machines” on iTunes and follow me on my social media @camrynrocks. They can also share the official video for the single.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I’m so lucky to live in a time where I can chat with all of my fans from around the world as easily as sending a tweet. I think it’s important to talk with fans because they become my friends! I want to hear what’s happening in their lives. It influences me and my music. I never want to lose connection with them.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you so much for waiting to hear new music. I’m so excited to continue to share what I’ve been working so hard on. So stay tuned, there is so much more to come!
