Chain NYC Film Festival: Thriller Shorts 2
By: MJ Asuncion
Drifter
Screenwriter J. O’Murchadha (who also served as one of the film’s producers) in collaboration with Michael Pizzano as director brings us the intriguing story of Drifter. This short film instantly grabs your attention from its early scene where we witness our villainous protagonist furiously sketching and hoisting a blade in the small confines of her van, which we deduce is also her home. We follow along as the Drifter (Yuka Taga), an aspiring serial killer, plans for her first victim. Due to her inexperience, not everything goes according to plan, but she is persistent, extremely patient and inherently resourceful. I was completely absorbed by the world of the Drifter and waited in anticipation for each event to unfold. Anthony Carvello, in a role opposite our drifter, is perfectly cast giving a standout performance that jumps off the screen. The only negative thing about this film is that I wish it were longer.
Freelance
Written and directed by Mike Gerbino, the film Freelance delivers on many of the elements of a good thriller, mixing in heart-pounding anticipation, a handful of “jump scare” moments, suspense and mystery. Katie (Renee Gagner) is a struggling video editor who receives a mysterious offer to edit a snuff film. Reluctantly she accepts the job, but soon after she starts to become haunted by the victim. Unable to tell what is real from her imagination, her fear and paranoia start to grow. Watching this short film stirred up my own feeling of panic, as I felt I was right there beside Katie. Freelance could easily become a full-length feature.
The Expected Guest
What would you do if a break-in happened in your home? Would you be able to defend yourself? Would you be prepared? The Expected Guest explores one way this story could unfold when homeowner and husband Dylan (Brandon Scott Hughes) anticipates a break-in by the Golden State Killer “Frank.” Directed by Artie Vincent and written and executive produced by Nicholas Ferracamo, the short film takes place centrally in Dylan’s living room where the two men face off in a way that is anything but expected. Nicholas Ferracamo also co-stars in the film, giving a notable performance opposite our main character. Although, the true standout is Brandon Scott Hughes who essentially carries the film with well delivered dialogue and his total embodiment of character. The Expected Guest keeps us on our toes with constant uncertainty of how this encounter will end.
