By: Jessica Wolff
Kevin O’Brien (Brendan Penny) asks Jess O’Brien (Laci J. Mailey) why she asked him to come to the inn and she explains through a long-winded explanation that he was the only one available. She asks for advice about having feelings for a hypothetical friend, and admits that it’s complicated since he is her employee. Kevin knows that she is talking about David Peck (Carlo Marks), and is unable to give her any helpful advice. Kevin admits that he doesn’t know how to deal with his own life, but advises Jess not to kiss David. Jess comes to the conclusion that she needs to make chicken parmesan and thanks a confused Kevin for his advice.
Carrie and Caitlyn Winters (Kayden and Abbie Magnuson) argue over who gets to be the fairy queen in their game, and Abby O’Brien (Meghan Ory) declares that she will be queen while they can share princess duties. Trace Riley (Jesse Metcalfe) arrives and does a secret handshake with the girls. They ask him to join them, but he tells them he’s busy. Trace asks Abby if Mick O’Brien (Treat Williams) is there, but she tells him he’s out. He sits next to her and Abby asks about the club. He tells her that John and Leigh are back in Nashville, and asks her what’s wrong. She reminds him they haven’t seen each other in a week, and Trace apologizes. Abby tells him that she can’t be his groupie. Trace is confident they can make their relationship work, but Abby isn’t sure. He promises to find a way, and Abby jokes that he needs to deliver on his promise to the fairy queen. Trace plays along, and Abby goes to play with her daughters.
Abby packs her daughter’s lunches, complete with a note. Mick asks her how work has been and realizes that she forgot to pack the sandwiches as she answers. She admits that she hasn’t slept much lately, and finishes packing the lunchboxes. Connor O’Brien (Andrew Francis) comes down, nervous about his first evaluation at work. Mick is confident that he’ll be running the firm soon, but Connor is not excited by the idea. Connor tells everyone that Kevin is moving out, and Nell O’Brien (Diane Ladd) tells Kevin that he’s always welcome to come back home. Megan O’Brien (Barbara Niven) asks him how things are going with Sarah Mercer (Jessica Sipos), and he admits that nothing has changed between them.
Trace shows Dee Riley (Karen Kruper) the club, and she is impressed. He suggests that she and Lawrence Riley (Tom Butler) come during the evening, and she mentions that Lawrence is working. Trace is surprised that he is back at work, and she asks Trace to talk to him about his decision. Megan scares Bree O’Brien (Emilie Ullerup) as she reads Simon Atwater’s (Oliver Rice) book. Bree tells her that she loves the book and doesn’t want it to end. She confesses that she picks bad books so she doesn’t have to deal with the pain of moving on from the story.
Jess frantically calls Nell as she struggles to make chicken parmesan. David asks what’s going on, and Jess tells him that she’s cooking dinner for tonight. He is confused that she is making dinner at 11AM and Jess lies that her family is coming over for dinner. As she tries to fan the smoke detector, she invites him to dinner. He agrees to come as he turns off the smoke detector, and Jess calls her family as soon as he leaves. Abby goes over the details of the development with Mick, and notices that he’s unususally quiet. Mick tells her that he’s worried about the forum, and losing Thomas O’Brien (Gregory Harrison) because of it.
In Baltimore, Carlton Chase (Cameron Bancroft) approaches Connor at his desk. He asks him how he likes working there, and Connor tells him that it’s a great opportunity. Chase tells him that he and the other partners are impressed with him, and that he sees a future for him at the firm. He tells Connor that he reminds him of himself, and that his hard work will pay off. Del Granger (Serge Houde) checks in on Abby and gives her a file to help Mick win the forum against Thomas.
Kevin and Sarah sit on the beach together reading from their perspective tablets. Kevin notices that she’s reading Atwater’s romance novel, and she sees that he’s reading a chemistry book for his exam. As they walk, Sarah offers Kevin the opportunity to train with the other firefighters to break from studying. Jess and David discuss a couple who appear to be very in love. David tells her that he needs to tell her something, and she is disappointed when he just tells her how to cook the chicken.
Bree thanks Megan for her help at the bookstore, and Megan asks her what Simon said about her loving his book. She tells her that she has no plans to talk to him again, as she believes that they wouldn’t work out. Bree begins to explain that she has abandonment issues, but Jess interrupts by bursting in. Jess begs Bree to help her, and Bree gets Jess to admit that she’s afraid of messing things up with David. Bree tells her that she’s busy, and Megan tells Jess that she can handle it herself.
Abby watches Mick practice for the forum and shows him the file. Explaining that it’s a copy of all of Thomas’ business transactions taken out of context, they both agree that it would ruin him. Mick can’t do that to Thomas, and Abby reminds him that her employer just wants Thomas out of the way of the development. Trace visits his father and asks him about his decision to return to work so soon after his heart attack. He tells him that he was tired of Dee fussing over him, and assures him that he’ll be fine.
Chase gets everyone’s attention and announces that Vince Coates (Tim Gosley) is retiring from the firm after forty years. He asks for a round of applause, and Connor is horrified that everyone returns back to work immediately after. He watches as Coates packs up his cubicle and leaves the office. Kevin runs through training drills with Sarah and the other firefighters and does relatively well. Sarah informs him that he nearly beat the course record and Jordan Wilder (Antonio Cayonne) asks them to grab a beer. Abby and Trace meet up and tell each other about their day.
Kevin toasts with the firefighters to the best study break, and Sarah presents him with a firefighter shirt for almost beating the record. He kisses her cheek and tells her they should do this again sometime. He leans in to kiss her again, but she pulls away and excuses herself. Nell asks Abby to join her and the girls in their game. She tells her that she will once she’s finished with work, but Nell tells her to remember who she is doing this for. It works, and Abby joins them in the game. Kevin and Connor talk about how their lives have turned out.
As Bree closes up the bookstore, Megan asks her to join her for dinner. Bree declines, and Megan tells her that she can’t keep pushing people away. She encourages her to talk about it, but Bree refuses. She declares that she can barely handle the present, let alone the past. Mick interrupts Thomas’ practice speech for the forum and tells him that they can’t do the forum. Thomas insists that people have a right to know Mick’s plans for the land, but Mick warns him that the forum is rigged. He shows him the file, and Thomas asks if he is going to use the information. Mick says that he wants to take Thomas for a drink, as this isn’t the right place for the debate. Thomas warns him that this doesn’t mean their fight is over as he leaves with Mick.
Megan tells Nell about her conversation with Bree, and declares that she has to help the family heal from the past. Nell advises her to concentrate on the present first as the past isn’t going anywhere. When Jess tells David that her family isn’t coming to dinner, he comments that it’s nice for it to be the two of them. He pulls out a perfectly cooked chicken parmesan that he made, and Jess is impressed. Megan calls a family meeting around the campfire and introduces the first O’Brien family s’mores eating contest and everyone sits around the campfire. Trace is thrilled to see his parents visit the club and goes up on stage. He dedicates his performance to his family and thanks them for coming.
The next morning, Kevin takes his exam and Connor receives news that he passed the bar exam. Jess approaches David and kisses him. Abby gets a text from Trace asking to meet her at the beach. Del tries to talk to Abby, but she tells him that she has errands to run. Connor asks to speak to Chase, who congratulates him for passing the bar. He tells Chase that he can’t work at the firm anymore. Chase is confused and Connor explains that he can’t work there despite his trust in him. He can’t believe that he’s quitting, and warns him of the consequences. Connor tells him that he’s made his decision, and Chase wishes him good luck.
Bree finds Simon waiting for her at the bookstore and is surprised to see him. He tells her that he received an email from Megan that she loved his novel. Bree tells him that she’s busy and tries to avoid talking to him. Trace plays with the girls on the beach as Abby watches them. Trace joins her and she comments that his idea was good. He suggests that they do it more often, and is confident that they can balance everything. Trace tells her that he’ll prove it to her and that he has a surprise for her.
