Chesapeake Shores – Freefall
By: Jessica Wolff
Trace Riley (Jesse Metcalfe) serenades Abby O’Brien (Meghan Ory) with his song “Freefall.” She loves the song but admits that it makes her sad. Trace assures her that it’s just a song, but Abby knows that everything he writes is from the heart. Their conversation is interrupted by Caitlyn and Carrie Winters (Abbie and Kayden Magnuson) begging Trace to play with them.
Megan O’Brien (Barbara Niven) practices her speech for the upcoming Art Walk, but struggles with what to say. Carrie and Caitlyn pretend to like it and Mick O’Brien (Treat Williams) comments that it’s her best attempt yet. Bree O’Brien (Emilie Ullerup) shows them a photo she found in the attic of a man and asks if anyone knows about it. Nell O’Brien (Diane Ladd) is shocked to see the photo and lies that it must have come with the house. Bree decides to put up the photo at her booth at the festival. When the whole family is finally seated, Mick creates a pancake toast to Kevin O’Brien (Brendan Penny) and wishes him luck on the move.
At the club, Trace performs with Leigh Corley (Brittany Willacy) and John Rawl (Bradley Stryker) on stage. Trace makes suggestions for the new song but John questions the amount of work being put into a free performance. He tells them that he has a family to support, and Leigh tells him that they are all making sacrifices. However, John isn’t convinced that Trace is sacrificing anything. Trace takes offense and responds that John can go home to Nashville whenever he wants. John urges them to sign a deal with one of the labels that have made an offer, as he doesn’t know how many shots they’re going to get. Trace looks to Leigh for her opinion, and she declares that they should call Mark Hall (Jerry Trimble).
At the Inn, David Peck (Carlo Marks) tells Jess O’Brien (Laci J. Mailey) that he’s leaving and she assumes that he is breaking up with her. He assures her that he’s breaking up with the inn since he needs to leave and take care of his sick father for a while. Jess pretends to speak for the inn and asks him not to leave. Connor O’Brien (Andrew Francis) asks to speak to Mick and tells him that he’s been working for Thomas O’Brien (Gregory Harrison). He tells him that he took a full-time position at his company, and Mick wishes him well. Connor is surprised that he isn’t upset, and Mick tells him that he’s more upset about him being secretive about it. When Connor tells him that he was worried about his reaction, Mick comments that it’s a reflection of their relationship.
As they walk around the festival, Megan asks Bree when the publishing company wants the finished draft of her novel. Bree tells her that she’s way behind and is frantically trying to catch up. Megan questions why she isn’t happier about the prospect of her book getting published and Bree confesses that it bothers her that Simon Atwater (Oliver Rice) didn’t ask her permission before sending her draft to the publisher. Abby shows Douglas Peterson (Victor Webster) the files for Mick’s development project and asks him to sign a confidentiality agreement. Before he signs, he asks her if she thinks this is a good deal based on her reputation of being honest. She tells him that it’s a great deal, and he begins to look over the documents.
Sarah Mercer (Jessica Sipos) approaches Kevin as he exits Sally’s. He tells her that he’s started the move-in process and has decided to become a paramedic. Kevin comments that he built a bookshelf recently and Sarah remarks that there’s always an extra part when she tries to assemble furniture. She tells him that the other firefighters put in charge of constructing their booth for the Art Walk and jokes that she’ll get a medal for rescuing the people hurt by her bad construction. Kevin wishes her luck and she asks for his help on building the tent.
Trace assures Abby that he’ll get lots of time off to come home between shows on their tour. Hall, Leigh, and John approach them and Mark shows them of a mockup of a tour poster. The band is pleased that Hall is offering them an opportunity to be a lead-in for one of the biggest country acts on their world tour. Reality sets in as Trace realizes that he will be gone for six to eight months if he takes the offer.
Bree tells Simon that she’s worried about how her family will accept her novel if it’s published. Jess runs up to them and frantically tells Bree that she has an emergency. After Bree remarks that everything with Jess is an emergency, Jess tells them about David leaving the B&B. Kevin approaches them and tells them that he’s not over Sarah and Bree asks Jess how much she pays David. She admits that she barely pays David and that he is apparently rich. Kevin insists that he’s fine being just friends with Sarah, but then admits that he isn’t. Leigh tries to convince Trace that taking Hall’s offer is a good idea, but Trace doesn’t want to be an overproduced sideshow. She reminds him that it’s a great opportunity for them to get exposure, but Trace is concerned about the amount of travelling and doesn’t think he’s ready.
Mick meets with Thomas, who tells him that he knows Matt Fox pulled out of the deal. However, Mick warns him to check his sources and Thomas asks him if Connor spoke to him. Mick responds that Connor told him about his work and asks Thomas if Connor told him about Fox pulling out. Thomas denies it and tells him that he’s glad that Connor is standing up to him. Mick tells him that he thought they could have an honest conversation but Thomas replies that they are fundamentally opposed to each other. He declares that they need to stop fighting, but Mick refuses to concede.
Megan attempts another speech, and Abby tells her to ease her worries by focusing on the worst case scenario. She asks Nell for advice, but she is distracted by her photo at Bree’s booth. Nell then tells Abby that her advice is terrible, and Megan asks Abby to introduce Trace herself. She tells them about the tour offer that Trace received and that she’s not ready to say goodbye. Hall approaches Trace as he sets up for the art festival performance and Trace tells him that he’s more about the music than the money. He tells Trace that most musicians that reject his offer are scared, but he assesses that Trace is more worried about leaving someone behind. Hall tells him that the secret to success is that he can’t have it all.
Kevin helps Sarah put up the tent for her booth and she tells him that she’s impressed with his decision to become a paramedic. She tells him that she enjoys their friendship, but then realizes that there are spare pieces left of the tent that were forgotten during the construction. As Trace plays with the girls, he tells Abby that he decided not to go on the tour since the timing wasn’t right.
Jess and Bree interview a potential new chef as David works around the B&B. The man questions why David is doing laundry, and David and Jess list everything David does around the Inn. Jess mentions that David bought a thousand books and the man comments that it’s crazy. As Bree defends Jess, she explains to David that she knew if he wanted her to know he would have told her. Bree tells the interviewee that he’s fired, and Jess tells David that she wants to know him. He tells Jess that he’s from a wealthy Boston family that even the interviewee has heard of.
Jess asks why he works there if he’s so wealthy, and David admits that he wanted to be a chef and that people treat him differently in Boston. She understands why he’s okay with her barely paying him, and the interviewee is shocked that Jess doesn’t pay. David tells her that his father is sick and he needs to go back to Boston to take care of him. Douglas asks Mick about the failed deal with Fox and tells him that he’s impressed with Mick standing up to him. Douglas compliments Abby for surviving telling Fox that he’s wrong, and Douglas makes Mick assure him that Thomas won’t be a problem for the development. They shake hands and go forward with the deal.
Connor is in disblief that Mick accused him of telling Thomas about the situation with Fox. He asks Thomas what he should do, and Thomas advises him to speak to Mick face to face. Megan continues to struggle with her speech and asks Nell for advice. Nell is distracted and confesses that the picture is of Dylan O’Malley, a man that she regrets telling how she felt about him. She advises Megan to focus less on the words and more on the emotion of what she wants to express. Bree compares Simon to Martin, and Abby tells her, Jess and Nell that Trace decided not to leave. However, Bree and Nell think it’s a bad idea that Trace is giving up everything for her. They help Abby realize that Trace will resent her if she doesn’t let him go.
Simon asks Bree why she is being distant, and she tells him to go back to England. He insists that he is not like Martin, but Bree tells him that he treated her the way Martin would by making a decision for her without consulting her. She tells him that she can’t do that again, and he tells her that he would do anything to rewrite his mistake. Simon makes an impassioned plea that he won’t hurt her again, and she kisses him before telling him that taking him back would prove that she hasn’t learned from her experience with Martin. David gives Jess a lesson in cooking, and she asks him why he didn’t tell her who he really was. He tells her that he wanted to tell her who he was, but he didn’t want things to change between them. David tastes her food and declares that the Inn is going to be fine without him. They embrace and Jess asks him not to say goodbye to her since she hates goodbyes.
As Megan shows the festival to some guests, Sarah tells Kevin that another piece was left out of the tent. It collapses on them and she kisses him after they laugh about it. Abby walks with Trace and tells him how happy she is with him. They stop as she tearfully tells him that she can’t let him give up on his dreams. He tries to protest and declares that he loves her. She declares her love for him and tells him if they’re really meant to be, this isn’t the end for them. They share a goodbye kiss before Abby walks away from him. Mick approaches Thomas at the festival, who tells him that he’s leaving for California that night. After a brief discussion, Mick informs him that he has a new business partner and construction will resume when he returns from Peru.
Abby, Bree, and Jess speculate on Nell’s lost love, and Bree suggests that they get rid of men and live independently as sisters. Abby breaks down admitting that it would mean no broken hearts, causing her to be embraced by Bree and Jess. Megan gives a rousing speech introducing the festival and Trace’s band to the crowd. During the performance, David leaves Jess in the crowd and Kevin receives an email that he’s been accepted to Stanford. Trace locks eyes with Abby as he performs and they relive their memories together.
