Interviews
Christine Ebersole – Bob Hearts Abishola
By: Sammi Turano
Q) You have been playing the role of Dottie for the past two seasons. How do you think she has changed since episode one?
A) Well, I think the stroke kind of changed things, really. But that was only the fourth episode when Dottie had the stroke, but I think it’s kind of made her realize how much she needs people.
Q) In the first season, Dottie had a stroke. How did you prepare for this storyline?
A) Well, thank you. Well, my husband, who I’ve been married to for thirty-three years…When we were together for about two years he had suffered from an acoustic neuroma, and the surgery kind of left him paralyzed on one side. I sort of experienced it through another person, so I was able to sort of witness and see what it was like for him. It wasn’t a stroke, but it was because of the surgery that it affected his left side of his body.
Q) The season finale showed Bob and Abishola’s wedding being postponed due to the Dele situation. Is Dottie going to be involved in helping him return?
A) Oh, I don’t know. There are too many spoiler alerts if I told you what happened. You just have to tune in!
Q) Will we see any more Dottie and Gloria scenes in the coming season?
A) Yes. I hope so! She is amazing.
Q) What can you tease about some of what Dottie will go through in the season?
A) I will just say Nigeria is involved.
Q) Dottie’s late husband is often mentioned in the show. Will we ever get to see him via flashback or get to know more about how he founded the business?
A) That would be a really, really interesting thing, especially in reality he is the head of props. I would love to see him act.
Q) Can we expect to see any interesting guest stars this season?
A) You never know what they have up their sleeve, but it’s all great. There is always these great surprises with these scripts.
Q) Do you have a favorite episode that you have been a part of?
A) Everyone is great. I mean, really. They’re all just so unique and great. So, I really can’t say because every single episode offers just so much comedic fun. And there’s so much heart in the show. I think that that really comes across. And everybody feels that on the set.
Q) What do you think makes the show such a fan favorite series?
A) I think it’s funny. And just the whole clash of cultures between Nigeria and Detroit, it’s really so great. It is also so genuine.
Q) What are some other projects you are working on?
A) Well, I have an album that’s going to be coming out on Warner Chappell Music that I started like five years ago when I did a concert at Carlisle in New York City. It’s something I’m very proud of and it’s been five years in the making. We’re sending the files over today as we speak, so I’m very excited about that. So, that’ll be streaming on Spotify and all those different places that you can listen to music.
I’m also in Paul Thomas Anderson’s new movie. That’s coming out in, I think in November, December.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are your fans and supporters?
A) I just I’m so happy to be part of this experience of “Bob Hearts Abishola.” We wouldn’t be anywhere without the fans. We wouldn’t be anywhere. So, that’s the support that kind of carries you through. For me, personally, I’m so, so, so grateful for the fans. I am happy that people watch the show and enjoy the show. We want to we want to give the fans their due because, like I say, we wouldn’t be anything without them.
