Coco Jones – Miss Me When I’m Gone
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I would say my sound if sort of urban pop. This song “Miss Me When I’m Gone;” however, is definitely a step out of my usual since it’s a ballad. My usual sound is more upbeat, make you wanna dance type music!
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) I’m influenced by artist who have created their own lane of individuality musically like: Byson Tiller, Justin Timberlake, Megan Trainor and Kehlani to say the least.
Q) Talk about the story behind your song “Miss Me When I’m Gone.”
A) “Miss Me” was actually a pre-written song that really touched me the first time I heard it. I remember thinking about how many people needed to hear this song and how many people needed to know that they would be missed if they were gone.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans will connect to?
A) I think they’ll connect most with the genuineness of the music. I know I did. The intensity of the music and the power of the overall song makes it feel like the song is talking to you specifically.
Q) How does the video for the song play into the message of it?
A) The video for “Miss Me” is first of all so beautiful, which is a credit to everyone who came together to make such a powerful video. Actually, the video showcases just one of the interpretations of this song, which is our military. With the message of “missing some one when they’re gone” we thought it would be even more relatable to tie in our soldiers constantly sacrificing their lives to protect our nation.
Q) How do you write your songs? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) I write depending on what is on my heart at the moments or what the music inspires, whichever comes first. Usually, if there is music already I can write for that music, but it’s sometimes better when there isn’t. It’s like making a poem and then a soundtrack to that poem.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) It’s crazy, as I get older I get more interested in the production side of things (Fun fact: I’m actually taking music production classes). I think being able to create the sound is so enchanting. So, I try and put my rookie production hands on every piece of music I make!
Q) What can fans expect from a live Coco Jones performance?
A) Energy, energy, energy. My goal with performances is to always see everyone in the crowd up and dancing. And if you’re not…I will target you! [laughs] Seriously, I want the crowd to wish the performance wasn’t over! So, just imagine that! [laughs]
Q) Will there be an EP or album coming out soon?
A) “Soon” is such an interesting word. [laughs] But, honestly, I can’t tell you what’s next musically. One day I think I have a pretty good idea and the next moment I have no clue. [laughs] But that’s the fun part of this lifestyle…You’ll just have to wait and see, just like me! (However, I’m always posting covers and fun videos on my YouTube Channel: cocojonessings)
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I, honestly and stereotypically, would want to collaborate with Beyoncé, not just for the song (because it would be fire), but also for the wisdom I’d get from her. She’s been RUNNING thangs for a minute! [laughs] I wanna learn!
Q) What can fans do to help promote your music?
A) Oh that’s easy! Just share it if you’re feelin it! We all have Instagrams and Twitters. [laughs] Just let ya peeps know they should check it out!
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) Social media is the next best thing to meeting your supporters in public. It’s important because you maintain personal relationships with the people you want to continue to support you!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) To the peeps who’ve been rocking with me since the “NBT” days, you guys are the real ones. You honestly are the reason I continue to get to live out my dream, you gotta know how much I appreciate ya’ll for that. I love ya’ll!
