Cocoro Auction – Memorandum
By: Jennifer Vintzileos
Q) How would you best describe your sound?
Ohno: Awako (vocalist) and Ohno (bassist) are the main creators of the songs.
Ohno creates the song on the computer and then the four of us work together in the studio to create it. We try to make the sound like a floating landscape.
Q) Who are your musical influences?
Ohno: I was influenced by a lot of Japanese rock bands, of course, but also by the sound of Coldplay.
Q) Tell us about the concept for the album Memorandum.
Ohno: I remember the feelings that we forget before we know it. This is the concept.
For example, we forget the feelings we had in our youth when we were purely pursuing our dreams as we grow up. However, I believe that such feelings are very important for living in the present. The theme of “Memorandum” was to remind you of those feelings.
Q) One of my favorites off of Memorandum is “Handmade Airships.” What was one of your favorites to write and record for the album?
Awako: I like them all, but I like “Longing to be a Rock Star” because I can remember that moment when the world was changed by the music.
Q) What do you hope fans will take away from the new album?
Awako: I hope you receive hope from this album. I want you to realize that what’s important to you is just around the corner.
Q) With Memorandum coming out September 9th, are there any plans for a listening party for fans?
Ohno: We will be doing a streaming live show on September 18. We’ll be distributing lyric cards in advance as data for you to watch along with the lyric cards at the show.
Q) Being from Kensei, Japan, how has your home land influenced the style and themes in your music?
Ohno: Most of us grew up in the countryside in the Kansai region of Japan, so we specialize in making music based on the image of the original landscape of Japan, especially mountains and rivers. I think we can do this because we grew up with such scenery in our childhood.
Q) Following the release of Memorandum, has there been discussion of a possible tour?
Ohno: Unfortunately, there are no plans for a tour. It has become difficult to perform live in Japan due to the effects of the corona. Right now, we are focusing on countermeasures and are thinking about prototyping live streaming.
Q) What is one of your favorite memories from performing live?
Ikawa: I remember the most memorable moment was when we did a good performance and everyone shouted out my nickname, “Sacchan.”
Q) What are you currently listening to?
Ohno: Taylor Swift’s Folklore. I think it’s a great album.
Q) What would you like to share with fans & supporters of your music?…
Tenmei: We hope that our music has touched your heart in some way through your encounter with us. We would be happy if you can spend your time from now on, cherishing the sadness, transience and feelings of that time.
