Come Home Elena
By: Luke Joseph
“I think you found a way to get out of bed this morning and I think that makes you the strongest person I know.”
-Alaric Saltzman to Elena Gilbert
This quote sums up the character that is Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev). It sums up our Warrior Princess who has never once stopped fighting. With “The Vampire Diaries” end fast approaching one can’t help but let their thoughts drift to Elena Gilbert as fans wonder if our modern day “Sleeping Beauty” will be awakening anytime soon.
Any fan of a movie saga, book series or (in our case) television series each time we’re close to reaching our final chapter we find ourselves on the road of nostalgia. This nostalgic road is all about the character Elena Gilbert and why she deserves a worthy ending. We’re all crossing our fingers that Nina stays true to her word, returns to Mystic Falls and gives the character she brought to life a deserving ending.
Elena Gilbert is the heart of Mystic Falls for the longest time as she kept it alive and thriving. When we lost Elena, a part of the town’s heart was lost as well. One of the many reasons why fans admire Elena is because she’s a fighter. When you look at the Salvatore brothers you end up realizing that they chose to be vampires. Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) each chose to feed on Katherine’s blood. They made the choice to condemn themselves to this world. Sure, Damon had made the choice to die and Stefan force fed him by the lure of blood, but in the end Damon still chose to move on with life. Both brothers are solely responsible for slowly being the monsters that they and everyone else knew them to be.
They made the choice to enter a supernatural life, but not Elena. Elena was different. Right from the very start of her being brought into this world, right at the start of her birth, she was cursed because of the doppelganger blood that ran through her. Already Elena’s life was not only tainted but in danger. She wasn’t responsible for her parents dying and when that happened, even after being taken in by Jenna (Sara Canning), she was forced to grow up. She grieved, but the world still continued to spin on and she had to move along with it. She wasn’t responsible for the supernatural that entered her life and, even with all the bad that came along with it, never once did she give up. If she decided to give up, it was simply done in hopes to sacrifice her life to save those of her loved ones around her. Even with all the doom and gloom she endured she still found reason to fight and become the Warrior Princess we all came to love. Elena accepted the cards that were laid out for her and she made do. Not a lot of characters can do that. She didn’t want to originally become a vampire, but eventually (overtime) learned to accept it and even embrace it.
With so many things ripped from Elena’s life it was bittersweet to see that she was given a second chance at what made her most happy – humanity. Elena is human again, but rather than having a chance to see her live her life she’s trapped in a box while the world continues to spin madly on without her. It is a world that needs a little light in its life to scare away what feels like a never ending darkness. Elena Gilbert needs to not only wake up, but she needs that life that she’s always wanted – the life she spoke about when playing the five years from now game with Damon.
In a loft in Tribeca above the bar that you (Damon) own and when you’re not working there you’re on our couch pouring me wine and massaging my feet after a long day at the OR. I’m in the surgical residency program
-Elena Gilbert
I can’t think of a more fitting career choice for Elena because she was helping save lives even before entering the medical field. So, yes, Julie [Plec] – we want to see Elena Gilbert (soon to be hopefully Salvatore) living in a loft with Damon and their two kids who will keep each other company so mom and dad can be distracted by other things.
