Command Sisters – Rain on My Parade

Q) How would you describe your music?

A) Our music is guitar and piano driven alternative pop, with brutally honest lyrics and harmonies. Growing up playing country music, we were influenced by those roots.

Q) Who are some of your musical influences?

A) My personal musical influences are Joni Mitchell, Lana Del Rey and Lorde (songwriting wise) and Hans Zimmer (I love orchestral music). Sarah’s (I have to agree with her) are The 1975, The Doors, Tame Impala and Hall & Oates, as they are all her favorite bands!

Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can come up with lyrics?

A) Personally, it’s very different every time! I don’t always need music for creating lyrics, (things often pop into my head while I’m on a walk or just chillin’), but I like to pick up a guitar, piano or synth/beat on my phone to inspire me sonically. I try to let it be natural and come to me and write something slightly different every time. I also get inspired by thinking of lyrical concepts first, then imagining what that story would sound like.

Q) I understand that the inspiration for “Rain on My Parade″ is based on a traumatic event. How does it feel putting that type of intimacy in your song out in the universe?

A) It actually feels very therapeutic. After the process of feeling the emotions, going through the pain, analyzing the song and then turning it into art is always a fulfilling feeling, when you finally put it out into the world so others can connect the same way you did.

Q) How did the process of writing “Rain on My Parade” compare to the other singles you’ve written in the past?

A) This one was special because Sarah worked on it with me. As many know, it’s typically just me who does the majority of the writing, so when I can finally pin Sarah down for some writing it’s always really special. [laughs] She came up with the chorus in a session with our producer, and right after running out of the bathroom with the entire chorus pretty much! It was really spontaneous. I couldn’t wait to finish it once I heard it.

Q) What kind of fan response have you gotten to your single?

A) It’s been really amazing to see the kind of response we’ve gotten to this song, since it’s so different and has a much darker content than our previous songs. We were anxious to see what people thought initially, but it’s been really cool to see how much everyone liked it. Super rewarding.

Q) Is there a full album or EP in the works and if so, what can you tell us about it?

A) Yes!! We have an EP that was recorded in LA a year before the pandemic, which we will be releasing this summer! (Along with some singles.) We are also working on a very exciting second project that we can’t wait to share with everyone.

Q) How has the lockdown impacted you creatively?

A) The lockdown has been good in the way that I have FAR more time to work on writing than ever before. I literally have hours more in my day to be creative without the interruption of life pre COVID. However…it’s also made things more difficult. With how the news has affected me and not being able to be out experiencing life, I’ve gone through some uninspiring periods creatively. I always try to force myself to work on something though.

Q) How has going through this musical journey been for both of you?

A) It’s been a challenge, mentally and physically, but at the same time it has been the most rewarding thing we’ve ever experienced. Music is obviously our passion, so the most difficult thing has been trying to separate the emotional part of it (when you have to) when you need to view things through a more business-minded lens. It’s also been incredible seeing how far we’ve come over the past ten years, looking back on all the fun trips we’ve had, cool shows we’ve done and all the inspiring people we’ve met along the way.

Q) Who would you love to collaborate with on a future project?

A) If I could work with ABSOLUTELY anyone, right now… Well, I’d love to song write with Sia, Finneas, Taylor Swift, Joni Mitchell, Julia Michaels and Charlie XCX. The 1975 would also be insane to collaborate with. Are those crazy answers? You asked for it. [laughs]

Q) With concerts currently on hold, do you have any plans for live streaming performances?

A) Yes, we have! We’ve had the opportunity to do quite a few recently and it’s been wonderful to get as close to live music as we possibly can. Stay tuned! Watch our socials for updates.

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of your music?

A) THANK YOU!  Thank you for being so supportive and so encouraging during these crazy times, when we can’t even perform live for you. I promise we’ll give you one hell of a show once all of this is over! Love you all.
