Cooper Phillip – Speak In Tongues
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) My sound is pop with soul and urban elements.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) My main musical influences are Mariah Carey, Kim Burrell, Whitney Houston. Also, classical composers – Puccini and Tchaikovsky.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “Speak in Tongues.”
A) My song Speak in Tongues is talking about love with no limits, commitments, struggle. Just true love in the moment.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) I think the music and especially the chords of the song make them feel dreamy, mellow and sensual.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) In the video I image being with this one perfect person and I’m imagining going into secret unreal place to find one.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) Usually I’m coming up with a melody first, but all of my melodies are structured and have the rhythm. After I’m done with the form, I’m writing the lyrics.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I’m very particular about the sounds and samples I like so I’m very involved in production. I love brainstorming with producers.
Q) What can fans expect from a live Cooper Phillip performance?
A) They can expect intimacy, storytelling, crying, laughing and much more.
Q) Will there be a full EP or album coming in the near future?
A) Yes, I’m working on my album right now.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) One of the most significant performances I can mention was American Anthem at NBA game in New Jersey many years ago. This performance opened important doors for me and became the reason for me to be getting the EB (extraordinary visa with a green card). I also love performing at new venues and new countries.
Q) You recently were featured on the Oscar del Amor track “Stay With You.” How did you come to work collaborate?
A) Oscar showed me the idea for the song and we completed writing in thirty minutes and had lots of fun working on this record.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Jay Z and Drake. I love people who are opinionated and honest with the audience.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I listen to a lot of classical music lately because I’m traveling and it makes me think very clear. Rachmaninov or Tchaikovsky.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I think you can only add to your brand if you can think visually and show visual ideas and more through your social media.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I would like to thank them for their time and interest. My fans and people in my life mean everything. I’m happy to share my journey and inspire.
