Interviews
Courtney Paige Nelson – Saved Myself
By: Courtney Groom
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) I think by now I’ve realized that my sound is very “unique.” I’ve had a lot of mixed reviews from people, but I want people to question what genre my music is. It’s a very different sound that blends different genres together! I’m very big fan of horror movies and creepy aesthetics, so I want my music to reflect that more so in the visual aspect.
Q) Who are some artists you are inspired by and look up to?
A) Any artist that started from the very bottom and gained true success by never giving up on their dream.
Q) This new single is part of a three-part story from your past songs “Sorry I’m Not Perfect” and “Better Now.” When you first started writing these songs was it always an idea to release them as a trilogy/story teller?
A) When I started writing “Sorry I’m Not Perfect” I knew I wanted to share the full story and I knew that wouldn’t be possible in just a single song. So, from the get-go, I knew I wanted to tell my full story in multiple singles.
Q) Was it hard to write your thoughts and feelings down knowing that this song would be release publicly for everyone to hear?
A) I’ve been ready to share my story and leave an impression for a long time, so if anything, I was excited.
Q) Do you have any visuals planned for the singles?
A) I already have a music video out for “Sorry I’m Not Perfect” and the newest one for “Saved Myself” will be out at the end of October!
Q) What is your process for writing songs?
A) I don’t really have a process. I will get random ideas in my head and write down a few lines in my phone. I write all of my songs in Apple Notes because I can be doing something mundane when all of a sudden, an idea comes to me out of nowhere.
Q) What do you hope people take away from when listening to “Saved Myself?”
A) I want people to understand that it’s okay to get help for mental illness. No matter what anyone says, it’s never more important than your health and stability. I was my own support system and although it was hard, it was also what gave me inspiration and strength.
Q) Do you think it is important as an artist to express this personal experience through songs and lyrics to help not only yourselves but others out in the world who might be going through a similar situation?
A) I think making music without a purpose is a waste of time.
Q) What are your future plans for music? An EP or album release?
A) SO MANY PLANS. I’m working on my EP currently which will be out in April or March. I did four collaborations with other artists during this pandemic that I’m excited to share with people once they come out. I have two more music videos already drawn up that will come out alongside the release of my EP, which will be about five songs in total.
Q) With everything going off in the world currently, I think a lot of people will find comfort in your music. What would you say to anyone who is reading this who is going through a tough time right now?
A) Thank you so much I appreciate that! Honestly, I hope people can just relate to my music because music is supposed to connect us. You have to find ways to cope with your emotions and work through them, specially currently with a pandemic going on.
