Crazy Ex-Girlfriend – The Signs Point To Josh…Or Is It Josh’s Friend?
By: Stacy Miller
At the end of the previous episode, Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) told Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III) that she deserved to be with someone who treats her well. It seems that Josh listened to her. The episode begins with Rebecca and Josh cuddling in bed while watching television. Josh and Rebecca aren’t surprised when Greg (Santino Fontana) enters the bedroom and the great guy that he is, he brought pizza. Rebecca is happy that she didn’t have to choose between the two of them. “Who gets to have sex with me tonight? You guys want to arm wrestle for it?” Rebecca giddily asks her guys. “Sure,” Greg and Josh reply in unison then they both kiss her.
This scenario isn’t really happening. Rebecca is talking with a woman and the two men in her life. They are a polyamorous coupling who thought she wanted to do an article on them for Psychology Today as her Craig List ad indicated. Rebecca apologizes for her lie, but needed help because she’s seriously torn. The woman tells Rebecca that what she is describing is a love triangle. “What’s a girl to do?” Rebecca wonders. Well Rebecca, to solve your love triangle you need to know “The Math of Love Triangles.” As do the viewers who get a musical geometry lesson with Rebecca and many professors.
Next, it’s a session with Dr. Akopian (Michael Hyatt). Dr. Akopian tells Rebecca that she shouldn’t be with neither man because of her mental health issues. It’s not Greg or Josh that is her problem, it’s what’s going on with her. Of course, Rebecca doesn’t listen. She determines that she’ll let the universe decide for her like she always has done in the past. All she needs to do is look for the signs. Pleased with herself, Rebecca gives Dr. Akopian the rest of the day off. “Is it even ethical to still take her money?” Dr. Akopian wonders after Rebecca leaves.
So while she is walking down the street, Rebecca is focused on looking for signs from the universe to help her chose the right man. A kid in a karate outfit (Josh). A whiskey bottle (Greg). Even with the signs, making this decision is hard.
Meanwhile Marco Serrano (Robin Thomas) has just sold the family house. Greg is surprised by his father’s sudden decision. But Marco thinks it will be a good thing for Greg as now he can pursue his dream and go to Emory to get his MBA. Greg says though that an alcoholic shouldn’t be making a life-changing decision this early in his recovery.
At Whitefeather and Associates, Paula (Donna Lynne Champlin) and Rebecca are having lunch in the breakroom. Rebecca tells Paula how exhausting it is looking for signs to decide Team Greg or Team Josh. She receives a notification from her phone. Is it a sign? No, it’s just her app reminding her of period day. Paula checks her app too as she and Rebecca have cycled together. But both Paula and Rebecca are late. Paula believes it’s because she has been stressing about attending law school. Rebecca assures Paula that she doesn’t need to stress about law school because she’s already doing it. Darryl (Pete Gardner) arrives with a box of chocolate for Paula as he was notified from his app about her cycle. Okay, that’s weird. Anyway, while Darryl is talking Rebecca gets sick and barfs in a waste basket. An uncomfortable Darryl leaves the room. Rebecca tells Paula that she believes this is a sign that she is pregnant. She ate the egg salad and her mother too would get sick eating egg salad when she pregnant. Rebecca is happy because she asked the universe a question and the universe answered, telling her she should be with Josh.
Greg talks with Guardrail (Jayden Lund) about whether he should move to Atlanta and attend Emory for his MBA and he knows making this kind of change goes against the rule of an alcoholic in recovery. But Guardrail says the only rule is the one not to drink. He tells Greg he could set him up with a new sponsor in Atlanta named Barry.
Rebecca is excited to see Josh at home and they start kissing. In their passion, Rebecca’s purse is knocked over and Josh finds her prenatal vitamins. Josh is shocked and speechless when Rebecca tells him she’s pregnant. She says that this is a sign as she was using birth control and he was using a condom. If the baby is a girl, they could name her Jeronica in keeping with the J names in his family. Josh Jr. or Jeremiah for a boy. It all turns out to be a false alarm as Rebecca got her period when she went upstairs to the bathroom. Change of plans, maybe they can have period sex instead. Rebecca’s short “Period Sex” song is interrupted by Josh. He tells Rebecca this was supposed to be a casual thing and now it’s just complicated. What just happened was a sign. “I don’t want to see you anymore,” Josh tells Rebecca and then he leaves.
The next day at Whitefeather and Associates, Rebecca sadly tells Paula that she is not pregnant and that Josh broke up with her. Paula encourages Rebecca to take some time for herself so Rebecca decides to go home. Realizing that she still hasn’t gotten her period, Paula looks at the pregnancy test she got for Rebecca than calls her husband Scott (Steve Monroe) and tells him to meet her at home. At the Proctor house, Paula is just staring at the pregnancy test. “I finally decide to apply to law school and that bitch fate knocks me up. My father was right – I’m a breeder, not a leader,” Paula laments.
Rebecca is walking to clear her head when she sees Greg at the park. Is it a sign? They talk and end up kissing. She tells him that it’s over with Josh and suggests that they give their relationship another chance. Later in her session with Dr. Akopian, Rebecca tells her what happened with Greg was a sign after she decided not to look for signs anymore. Dr. Akopian realizes that Rebecca doesn’t listen to anything she advises in their therapy sessions. But Dr. Akopian wants a kayak, which the many sessions with Rebecca is helping to pay for.
At Whitefeather and Associates, Paula is still struggling over taking the pregnancy test. Darryl’s appearance breaks her out of her thoughts. He has a surprise for her. Darryl called someone involved in admissions for the law school she applied to and pulled some strings to get her in for this semester. And with that, the office staff enter wearing party hats and Darryl gives Paula a bunch of balloons. “Nothing can stop you Paula, not anymore.” Paula bursts into tears which Darryl assumes are tears of joy. As a present, Darryl gives her Nine West heels “The kind Melanie Griffith wears in the movie Working Girl.” I love how Darryl is always supportive of Paula and her dreams. Although she would never call him her best friend, Darryl is a true friend to her.
Rebecca is waiting for Greg but after he sees a “Danger” sign near where she is standing, Greg takes it as a real sign that beginning a relationship with Rebecca again would be dangerous. So later Greg meets Josh, White Josh (David Hull), Chris (Jacob Guenther) and Hector (Erick Lopez) at the airport to say goodbye as he decided to go to Emory. Meanwhile, Rebecca starts to text Greg asking what happened to him meeting her. She gets a SnapChat notice and rushes off. Rebecca drives to the airport and stops Greg before he gets on the plane. “What happened?” Rebecca asks.
At the Proctor house, Paula has finally taken the pregnancy test. And gasp…she’s pregnant! What is she going to do now?
