Crazy Ex-Girlfriend – When Do I Get to Spend Time with Josh?
By: Stacy Miller
The episode opens with Paula (Donna Lynne Champlin) and Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) using teamwork to put food away. “I’ve really enjoyed having a wife. I can see why people have several,” Paula says. Although she appreciates the help Rebecca has been to her, Paula thinks Rebecca needs to go and talk with Josh (Vincent Rodriguez III) as he has been camped outside Casa Proctor for three days and spending all his money on stuffed animals, balloons and flowers. Rebecca admits that she’s afraid. Josh had three girlfriends in a short amount of time, what if he disappoints her again? Josh enters and apologizes for hurting Rebecca, but promises that they will start over and do things differently this time. “You hurt her, I kill you,” Paula warns Josh before saying, “Go and be in love.”
So, Josh and Rebecca spend a romantic day together, complete with soft pretzels. Four days later, Josh calls out sick so he doesn’t have to go to work. He finally tells Rebecca he loves her, but their romance is interrupted by Heather (Vella Lovell). Apparently, Darryl (Pete Gardner) has been “stalking” Heather’s life looking for Rebecca. When she checks her phone, Rebecca finds thirty-seven messages from Darryl. She tells Josh that before they can spend the day together at Regent Waters, she needs to go to the office to find out what Darryl wants. Rebecca suggests Josh come along, it’ll only take two minutes.
At Whitefeather and Associates, Josh tells Rebecca that he’s made reservations at Pepper and Doyle for a dinner with his parents. He’s eager for his parents to get to know them as a couple. Rebecca goes into the conference room where Darryl introduces her to Nathaniel Plimpton (Scott Michael Foster) who is the new co-owner of the firm. Rebecca is surprised as she knows the Plimptons are successful upscale attorneys so why would they want a smaller operation like Whitefeather and Associates? Nathaniel asks to speak with Rebecca in his office, which is Darryl’s former office. Darryl is now in Rebecca’s office so Nathaniel offers Rebecca a cubicle. “Anyone you want, maybe something by the kitchen.” Nathaniel explains that Whitefeather and Associates is now going to be run like a real law firm, which means sixty-hour work weeks and limit thirty minute lunches. He’ll need Rebecca to cancel everything she has planned and then cancel them again to guarantee that those appointments know they are cancelled. Nathaniel’s idea for “a real law firm” reminds Rebecca of everything she got away from in New York. She has found happiness in West Covina with Josh Chan. Nathaniel glances over at Josh, who he thought was the guy sent to changer the water cooler. Rebecca refuses to work under Nathaniel’s conditions so she quits. However, the threat doesn’t work on Nathaniel as he notes, “Now I only need to fire four people.” Nathaniel explains that per his agreement with his father, he needs to get 250k out of the budget by Friday morning. Rebecca asks why he couldn’t get it out of new business. “No one can do that,” Nathaniel answers. “I can” Rebecca says. But she quit, so it’s not her problem anymore. Witnessing Rebecca and Nathaniel’s conversation, Paula, Karen (Stephanie Weir), Maya (Esther Povitsky), Tim (Michael McMillian) and George (Danny Jolles) talk about the possible firings then sing “Who’s The New Guy?” Rebecca tells Josh that she can’t go to Regent Waters with him. Nathaniel smirks when Maya thinks Josh is the water cooler guy.
Nathaniel and Darryl have lunch. Nathaniel tells Darryl that he is the majority stock holder because not only did he, buy Darryl’s equity but Darryl’s ex-wife’s equity that she won in the divorce settlement. Meanwhile, Rebecca is on the phone trying to get high powered clients for the firm. She goes into Nathaniel’s office and learns he is making a list of people to fire, including “red-headed sarcastic mom lady” (Paula). Rebecca gets a message on her cell phone regarding a meeting with a high power she scored for Whitefeather and Associates. Then, she moves into her cubicle next to Paula who is stressing about getting fired and having to move into a box with her family. Darryl gives White Josh (David Hull) his eagle statue (since it doesn’t fit in Rebecca former smaller office) and bemoans that he made a mistake selling the firm.
Rebecca gives her presentation to the potential high power clients. Apparently, they want to expand their country club but the cemetery next door is suing them. Rebecca believes that the cemetery that was supposed to be closed in three years for running out of space is still operational because they are burying bodies on top of each other. So, when she proves her theory they will withdraw their lawsuit. They tell Rebecca that they will give her their answer in two to three weeks. After the potential clients leave, Rebecca and Darryl congratulate themselves…they are SO HIRED. But Nathaniel disagrees because if they were hired why would it take two or three weeks for an answer? Nathaniel then fires George! Of course, George KNEW he’d be fired first, but intends to speak up for himself as he sings in the song “George’s Turn.” George sings “George won’t be ignored, George won’t be interrupted, because…” Then, we fade out to commercial because George was interrupted!
Josh and Rebecca have dinner with Josh’s parents (Amy Hill and Alberto Isaac), but the meal is ruined for Rebecca because Nathaniel is there, too. He watches Josh’s conversation with the Chans and causes Rebecca to hear all of Josh’s words as “blah, blah” and garbed nonsense. Rebecca is so distracted that she is rude to Josh’s parents before leaving. That night, Paula and Rebecca are at the cemetery digging for proof of the burial fraud. That hit pay dirt when Paula finds two skulls and pelvises in a grave. However, a security guard glares a flashlight on them. Rebecca runs off, but Paula falls into the grave! The next morning, Paula tells Rebecca that she convinced the security guard to let her go by agreeing to go to the Long Beach Aquarium with him because he likes the touch tank. Paula wants to wash the dead body and security guard breath off herself, but Rebecca says it is 7:45 and they need to rush to the office because Nathaniel is firing people at 8:00. Paula and Rebecca arrive at Whitefeather and Associates before the firings and announce they have proof against the cemetery. Unfortunately, because they weren’t hired Nathaniel is ready to proceed with the firings. Rebecca asks for a private moment with Nathaniel in the conference room. But when he refuses to budge, Rebecca lounges at him with a pen. The potential clients arrive and Paula lies that Nathaniel has peanut allergies and Rebecca was trying to help him with his epi-pen. Whitefeather and Associates are hired because they see Rebecca has that killer instinct.
Later, Rebecca talks with Paula about how she was rude to Josh’s parents because she let Nathaniel get in her head. She just hopes that Josh can forgive her. When she goes home, Rebecca apologizes to Josh. He forgives her because he knows that she was trying to save her friends’ jobs.
Meanwhile at the Long Beach Aquarium, the security guard (Patton Oswalt) orders Paula to touch the sting ray and the sea urchin. I guess it’s a small but slimy price to pay after you’re caught in an open grave by cemetery security.
