Crazy Ex-Girlfriend – Who Needs Josh When You Have A Girl Group?
By: Stacy Miller
Remember Trent (Paul Welsh) from back in Season One, the guy Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) pretended was her boyfriend but who later developed an obsession with her? Well, he’s back. And as the episode opens, Trent spends $10,312.98 on supplies for what he calls “The Bunch Inception.” He plans to get in good with a certain bro group in order to get in with a certain lady. I have a hunch that it rhymes with Bunch! Trent arranges to run into Josh (Vince Rodriguez III) and get himself invited to hang out with the guys. Looks like operation “The Bunch Inception” is working!
The unlikely trio of Rebecca, Valencia (Gabrielle Ruiz) and Heather (Vella Lovell) continue to hang out. Who would have thought that a year ago that these three would have become friends? They are definitely a girl squad. This leads to the girl group song “Friendtopia.”
The next day at Whitefeather and Associates, Darryl (Pete Gardner) reminds Rebecca that she may have other friends like Paula (Donna Lynne Champlin) who would like to be included in her new girl group. Karen (Stephanie Weir) tells Rebecca she has a friend who could spice things up with adult toys if Rebecca wanted to throw that kind of party. So, Rebecca invites Paula over to hang out in her new house with her on Friday night, neglecting to mention other gal pals Heather and Valencia will also be there and that it will be a sex party. Even though Paula has a law school test in Torts, she agrees to come. Later while Paula is studying at her house with Sunil (Parvesh Cheena), he tries to get her to see how needy Rebecca is and also asks why she hasn’t shared with Rebecca about her abortion. Paula says that it’s hard bringing up difficult topics to people.
Rebecca gives Paula a tour of her new house when Heather and Valencia enter with the t-shirts they picked up. The t-shirts are pink and have #gurlgroup4evah written on them. “Introducing the newest member of our girl group Paula,” Rebecca says.
Meanwhile, Trent sings the “Trent is Getting Ready Song” as prepares to infiltrate Josh’s bro group. He has to cover when he already knows White Josh (David Hull) and Hector’s (Erick Lopez) names as he is pretending that they never met. But, unfortunately for Trent, he is not easily accepted into their bro group. In fact, they are very uncomfortable with him. Poor Trent, he is the male version of Rebecca from Season One, trying to fit in with a group but trying too hard. But the salesgirl he brought the supplies from tells him to go to the woman he loves and confess his feelings.
And at Whitefeather and Associates, Maya (Esther Povitsky) tells Darryl that she wishes that she was at Rebecca’s cool girl group party. She asks Darryl whether he wants to team up with her to infiltrate the party. There’s a lot of infiltrating in this episode!
At girl group central, Rebecca apologizes for not telling Paula that it wasn’t going to just be the two of them. Paula is not having fun at the party and is annoyed when Karen arrives dressed as Angelique, sex toy goddess. Paula is not interested in Karen’s presentation and decides to use the bathroom, which she ends up getting trapped in. This leads to a cool take on “Trapped in the Closet” with the song “Stuck in the Bathroom.” Rebecca tells Paula that she will call 911 and Paula’s husband Scott to let him know what is happening. But since Rebecca doesn’t have Scott’s telephone number, she has to make the call from Paula’s phone. Paula doesn’t want Rebecca to use her phone. Why? Well, Rebecca will tell you why. “So, Paula texted her friend from law school Sunil ‘Help, I’m having the worst night of my life.’” But that’s not all, Paula continued with the text asking Sunil to make up some story and come get her out of there. Rebecca is angry and hurt because these are the kind of texts that Paula used to send to her. Rebecca tells Paula that she agonized that Paula felt that she was replacing her but now Rebecca realizes that she is the one being replaced. Sunil arrives to get Paula and tells the lie about her son Tommy having to be hospitalized after stepping on a nail. Rebecca tells Sunil that his lie wasn’t even convincing. “You sound like you’re playing Pepper in a road company of Annie.” Sunil doesn’t appreciate Rebecca’s remark as he has a degree in theater.
Meanwhile at Whitefeather and Associates, Maya is tired of trying to come up with ideas to get into Rebecca’s party. When Darryl teases her, Maya stands up for herself. She asks why Darryl is always bullying her. It causes a hostile work environment and is causing her health problems. Darryl apologizes. It’s not that he doesn’t like Maya, she reminds him of someone who makes him uncomfortable. “Me, myself and I,” Darryl says. He sees a lot of himself in her. Someone who tries too hard to fit in. Darryl promises that they will use Maya’s next idea to get into Rebecca’s party.
Encouraged to tell the woman he loves how he feels about her, Trent arrives at Rebecca’s house. Ironically, he is the one to get Paula out of the bathroom. Paula and Rebecca have it out. Paula angrily tells Rebecca that their relationship is one-sided, with Paula giving more than she gets from Rebecca. She finally confesses about the abortion. Rebecca is hurt, she thinks she is a good friend. She came to Paula when she thought Paula was sick to ask what was wrong and Paula said nothing. But Paula reminds her that a friend doesn’t have to ask another friend, because if the person cares they make the effort to find out. Their conversation is interrupted by the fire department. Well, actually Darryl and Maya who perform a pretty cool dance. Later with Maya, Darryl proudly shows workers at Whitefeather and Associates the new dance he learned. “It’s called The Maya,” Darryl says.
After everyone has gone home, Rebecca decides to have sex with Trent to cheer herself up. But she tells him that once they do it, she never wants to see him again. Trent then thanks Rebecca…for taking his virginity!
