Crooked Teeth – One Week Off
By: Alejandra Gil M.
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Loud and infectious!
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) If I’m speaking based on what we all listen to in the van it’s a solid mix of Green Day, Paramore, Noah Kahan, Florence and the Machine, Lil Wayne, Ethel Cain, blink-182, Halsey, Ruston Kelly, Run the Jewels, PVRIS and more!
Q) Your new single “One Week Off” is out. What’s the song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) For this one, I started to write the chorus after a therapy session. I was experiencing a lapse in health insurance coverage at the same time I needed my refill of Prozac. My therapist told me to write a song about it and here we are! I had the chord structure and an idea of a melody, but it all got refined and made pretty once we hit the studio
Q) The song was also released with a music video directed and produced by DJay Brawner. How involved were you in the creative process?
A) Well, DJay and I went back and forth on a few different concept ideas but ultimately landed on this idea to shoot in the same room we did some other shooting in. But we essentially flipped the room, or I guess flipped our performance position, which was a fun little trick! DJay and his small team absolutely crushed it.
Q) This will mark your first release featuring Livi Dillon on vocals. What’s it like having a new addition to the band?
A) It’s been incredible! Livi is so insanely talented, and it’s been a real blessing to get to share space together in the band. This is my personal favorite song to date which leaves me so excited for the future
Q) Have you received any feedback for the song that has stayed with you?
A) Every night on the tour we just finished we’d have people coming up telling us how much that was their favorite, but also in many instances they were telling us how relatable it is and I think that will always be the most affirming or flattering thing to hear from a listener. That’s literally why I make music!
Q) The single was co-written with acclaimed songwriter Nick Long (Machine Gun Kelly, Blink-182, Gwen Stefani) and produced by Shan Singh. What was your experience like working with them?
A) Top notch sesh for real! Nick is someone we’ve wanted to work with for years now so to be able to connect in the creative space was a real treat and I’m so proud of what we came together to make.
Q) The track dives deep into themes of depression and navigating life unmedicated, delivering an unfiltered, heartfelt narrative. What do you hope people take away from it?
A) Honestly, we just hope it makes others feel seen/heard/validated!
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) Wouldn’t you like to know! [laughs] Just kidding! Just kidding! We are working on new music and very stoked to be. I’ll put it at that!
Q) You will be hitting the road with a West Coast Headline Tour. What are you most excited about love shows?
A) This interview is now taking place on the other side of the tour, but it was incredible connecting with new fans/listeners and re-connecting with those who have always been there and continue to come out and bring their friends. Incredibly grateful to be able to grow a sense of community around our rock songs
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) Mark Hoppus, Tim Armstrong, K. Flay, Ruston Kelly, Jason Butler and Kennyhoopla are a few that come to mind for me personally!
Q) What artist/musician are you currently listening to and why?
A) A few artists I really dig right now are Caroline Romano, Silly Goose, Ruston Kelly, Sludge Mother and Dear Seattle!
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you from the bottom of my frickin’ heart for listening and supporting this silly thing we do!!
