Interviews
D. Elliot Woods – Desire
Q) What are the current projects that you are working on?
A) I am actually in the situation where I am waiting to hear about a project. I am waiting to hear if I am going back on “Watch Over Me.” Everything else are new jobs coming in.
Q) You were recently on the show “Desire.” Please tell us about your character Dr. Carl Miller.
A) The truth of it is that he is extremely average to say the least. I think the first two people that I treat die. He’s not very good, but he’s very sincere and means well.
Q) What made you want to be a part of the show?
A) I really like what they’re trying to do. It’s something different because it’s a fixed story arch that is going to only be on for thirteen weeks. It’s not been tried before and I thought it would be something really exciting. It could, very well, catch on and be the next big thing. It’s just a fun opportunity to evolve as an actor and grow with a lot of different parts. This is something, that if it did become a big hit, it still would not keep me as that same character for years and years. It was a good opportunity to be exposed to something different.
Q) What was your most memorable moment from filming?
A) The most memorable moment of recent actually happened on “Boston Legal.” I’ve had the opportunity to work with a lot of great people over the years, but this was the first time that I had been in scenes with people that are all definitely going to end up in the “Television Hall of Fame.” For example, there was Julie Bowen, Mark Valley, Rene Auberjonois, Candice Bergen, Michael J. Fox and me in one scene! Every person I turned to, if I was not on my game, I could have very well gotten caught up in thinking, “I can’t believe I’m standing here!” It was such a wonderful experience and they were all so very giving. That was big for me, personally, because that was the first time I realized that I actually belong with this group of people and it was really cool.
Q) What has been your favorite project to work on?
A) I’ve had a lot of good experiences. I will say that the people who do the “Star Trek” TV series and movies, I’ve done several things for them, are a very top notch group of people. I can’t say I’ve had a favorite experience, per se.
Q) Who would you most like to work with in the future?
A) I would love to work with Clint Eastwood. I know that Paul Newman said he’s only going to do one or two more films. I’d do anything to be a part of something like that because he’s a legend. I’d like to work with Denzel Washington, of course. I’d like to work with John Lithgow again. I did an episode of “Third Rock From The Sun” and he is just an amazing person and very giving. I’d like the chance to work with him over a longer period of time, maybe on a TV series or something like that.
Q) What made you want to be an actor originally?
A) I actually knew someone who became an actor when I was still very young. It was something that wasn’t familiar to me, but it gave me a chance to see another possibility of a career. It kind of was in the back of my mind. During college I was into sports and on the way to doing the corporate America thing. Because of a sports related injury, I kind of stumbled into an acting class. In that acting class, I was thinking it was going to be an easy credit, but it was the first time I ever felt like I was at home. The teacher for that class was Alfre Woodard and it actually opened the possibility for me. Then, between watching her and Morgan Freeman over the years, it just got me really interested in it. Alfre was really encouraging. She saw potential and suggested to me to come out and pursue it. I took her up on it and here I am!
Q) You are also a part of the new show “Watch Over Me.” How do you feel being a part of a new series?
A) I feel really excited. It’s something, again, very different. It’s a very big departure from the other things that I’ve done. It’s fun and I love working down in San Diego. This group of people that are putting together the show are really top flight, first rate people. It’s so helpful to work on things when you’re working with people that really care about the end product, but they are not so self absorbed.
Q) What do you do in your spare time?
A) I don’t have a lot of spare time these days. I have a three year old daughter and between taking her to school and watching her develop and evolve, I spend a lot of time with her. Of course, I am also busy either pursuing or participating in other acting projects. I am a basketball junky so I have to take time out to watch the NBA games. If I don’t get to see basketball, there is going to be major catastrophes in LA.
Q) What would you say is your latest obsession? A book? A movie? A sport? An activity?
A) I’ve always liked going to movies. I will say the most recent movie that I’ve seen that has driven me nuts to the point where I’ve had to go back and see it again was The Devil Wears Prada. She killed that movie! I had to go back and see it again because she was amazing. I hate using that word because you hear it so much with people’s performances, but she was so right on with it! It was just amazing to watch. I love going to movies and watching and learning. She is just a master!
Q) What would you like to say to your fans and supporters?
A) First off, a very heartfelt thank you. It means a lot to be encouraged to become more of who you are already are and encouraged to evolve. I also encourage everyone else to follow their dreams to be the biggest them that they can possibly be. The world needs us. I think it is important that everyone try to focus on what they should be doing and what feels like home to them. Allow yourself the freedom to become that is so important.
