DallasK – All My Life
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) Most people know me for my more electro-house style stuff, but I would say my sound ranges between genres on my newer music yet I always try and keep it powerful.
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Daft Punk, Kanye West and M83 are my three biggest influences.
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “All My Life.”
A) “All My Life” was written by myself, Sasha Sloan and Johnny Mitchell. We were working at my house and Johnny was playing the keys and had the melody for the chorus. We built out the verses from there and then I finished the production in Miami a couple months after.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) We just wanted to write about how everything can change in a moment, whether it’s a relationship, like in the song or something else in life. And the feel good vibe on the drop brings some fun as well. So, I think different people will connect to different parts of it
Q) “All My Life” and “Self Control” feature you singing for the very first time. What made you feel confident to finally share your own voice?
A) I was invited to perform some of the songs I’ve written for other artists for an event my publishing company hosted. At first, I was pretty reluctant, but I was on a mission to challenge myself so I figured I would sing and play guitar. With a little practice I gave it a shot and people seemed to like it. That gave me the confidence to record some of the records I was working on with other people and now here we are!!
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) It changes every day and depends on who I’m working with. But I will say I’m usually a “melody first” person, meaning we get some music or chords down that we like and sing some “blah” or gibberish melodies on it. Then, when we find something we like, we plug in the words and the concept. But other times there’s a concept so strong that I’ll base everything around that from the start.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) Almost 100%. I’ve collaborated with a couple other producers, but to this point, every solo song that I have put out as an artist is all me.
Q) What can fans expect from a live DallasK performance?
A) Right now, it’s still a DJ set. We’re still building the live show, but from a DallasK DJ set expect a big, big party. I love playing my own music and everything else that I love. I started off DJ’ing open format clubs so I really like to read the crowd and base what I play off what they’re vibing with. I just want everyone to leave at the end of the night feeling like they had a great time.
Q) Do you have plans to release an EP or full album in the near future?
A) For the foreseeable future I’ll just be releasing singles. Maybe something bigger towards the end of the year
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) I love playing in new countries that I’ve never been to before because it allows me a different look into a culture rather than if I went there as a tourist. I love playing in Asia – China, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand are some of my favorites as well as the Philippines. The fans you meet there are so passionate about the music.
I also love playing in Orlando. It’s always great to be back in your hometown. LA is my second home and always great.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I’d love to work with Daft Punk. I couldn’t get any better than that! Also, I would love to work with T-Pain. He’s just the man.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) I really like all of the Brockhampton and Kevin Abstract stuff. I think their collective has a lot of energy and something fresh is coming out of it.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) Social media is so important because it gives people who might not have access to you or your music the ability to connect with you. I always try to write everyone back and feel like the one-on-one connections you can make on social media are more important than the bigger picture.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) Thank you, thank you, thank you for supporting me and listening to the music! Without my fans I’m nothing and I’ll let them know that they can look forward to a lot of music and shows this year.
