Dasha – Nervous
By: Lisa Steinberg
Q) Tell us the story behind your new single “Nervous.”
A) This song is about my first intimate experience. It’s about letting my guard down for the first time and letting someone know me better than I’ve ever let anyone. I was so in love, and it was a really special experience.
Q) How did the process of writing this song compare to other singles you’ve written in the past?
A) I had the idea for “Nervous” while driving around Nashville back in March. The hook “baby you make me so nervous” just came to me. An old songwriting teacher I had back at Belmont described songwriters as having this “antenna” that songs just come to you through. The song writes itself, you’re just the person chosen to write it. That’s how I feel like “Nervous” was written.
Q) What made you decide to go with acoustic guitar for “Love Me Till August?”
A) I didn’t see a point of adding anything else that would distract from the lyrics and storyline. In this case I left like less was more. “Love Me Till August” production and instrumentation was built to simply support the lyrics and melody.
Q) You mentioned that listening back to this song hurts you. Why is that?
A) Listening back to “Love Me Till August” hurts because it was written about something real that happened to me. I think one of the cruelest things the universe can do to you is give you the right person at the wrong time. I can’t help but feel how I did that Summer.
Q) Was there a particular line or aspect to these two songs that you found most challenging to create?
A) My co-writer and best friend, Jules Paymer, and I rewrote the verses to “Nervous” after cutting the demo. At first the verses were also saying that I was nervous being around this guy from the beginning of verse one. After listening to it a few times I thought it would be more authentic and stronger if the verses were full of confidence and power, and then in the chorus I got vulnerable and admitted that I’m nervous.
Q) Have you received any feedback online that has stood out about “Love Me Till August” or “Nervous?”
A) I’ve gotten countless direct messages on Instagram and comments on my Tik Tok videos about them relating to these songs. I’m so happy people relate to my songs as it’s my greatest goal as a songwriter. One person posted “Nervous” on their story with the caption, “I’ve never had a favorite song until I heard ‘Nervous.’” It’s moments like those that inspire me to never stop writing.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) Absolutely. I have an album plus of songs that I want to release, but before I pull the trigger I’m giving myself a few months to out-write the songs I have up for release. I’m becoming a better writer and artist every day and my inspiration and vision is constantly changing. I want my debut album to be as authentic as possible.
Q) How has lockdown impacted you creatively?
A) Lockdown has actually been a blessing in disguise. It’s given me a chance to focus on my songwriting more than anything.
Q) With concerts currently on hold, do you have any plans for live streaming performances?
A) Yes! I’m doing a few live streams here and there so make sure to follow me on Instagram @dashamusic to stay updated. As far as live shows go. I’m opening for Brooke Alexx on October 15th in Nashville, TN at the High Watt! This is going to be a full-blown show/dance party. I cannot wait.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of your music?
A) Thank you for supporting my music and being here since day one. It’s only the beginning. I love you all so much.
