David Kopp – First Blood
Q) What are the current projects that you are working on?
A) The current project that I am working on involves a recurring role on a television series called “Blade,” which is a new show based on the comic book. I’ve done three episodes on that this season and it looks as though they are looking to wrap up their first season. It’s aired on Spike.
Q) Please tell us about your character Zack Star on the show “Blade.”
A) He’s the twin brother of the lead girl, Krista Starr [played by Jill Wagner]. He’s kind of the inciting incident to the story. The pilot starts off with me being shot and Krista comes back to town and finds out. That’s how she gets into the world of the vampires.
Q) What made you want to be a part of this project?
A) They were looking for the actor to be the character for a while since the person had to look like the twin to Krista. The main reason I wanted to be a part of the show was Peter O’Fallon, who was the director. I had worked with him before on a show called “That Was Then” and also on a show called “Mysterious Ways.” I enjoyed working with him.
Q) Does the cast have a lot of chemistry off set as well as they do on set?
A) Absolutely! Everybody is hugging, laughing and joking. It’s a fun set to be on!
Q) What is a day of filming like for you?
A) A day of filming is like being spoiled, basically. I get up, get to the set on time, eat well and am treated well. You just have a lot of fun doing what we all want to do. The job of the actor is finding work, and that’s what’s difficult. When you actually get to work, it’s just a blast. There’s nothing better!
Q) What was it like working with director Peter O’Fallon?
A) He is very relaxed, but focused. He is a fun guy to be around. You trust his direction and his opinion. I feel that all of the projects that I’ve worked on with him, you have the ability to be creative and to be a little edgier. He seems to like going in that direction. He’s very supportive for actors.
Q) Why should viewers take the time to tune in to “Blade?”
A) “Blade” is bloody. It’s a great gritty show and the whole prospect of vampires, to me, is interesting because of the way they have created a whole world about the vampires’ anatomy, what they can and cannot do and all of these things that come out of the comic book. The first episode was written by a fellow by the name of David S. Goyer who recently wrote Batman Begins, which was a fantastic movie. So, he was really a big guy to have on the pilot. It was well written and with Peter directing, it was really well shot. It’s a gritty entertaining show and I am glad to be apart of it.
Q) What has been your favorite project to work on?
A) My favorite project was a series called “Glory Days.” I made a lot of friends on that show that I still have today. It was great because it was four months of solid work for me. I liked the character I was playing and I liked what the show was about. It was just a big party on and off the set. It was an absolute blast!
Q) Why did you originally want to be an actor?
A) I was modeling in Calgary and the talent conventions that we would attend had acting, singing and dancing. My agent wanted me to do all of it, even though I didn’t want to. I did it and I started to win all of these awards for the monologue contests. At the time, we did a convention out in Vancouver and a couple of talent scouts thought I should take a shot and come to Vancouver. I had just dropped out of college and was unhappy so I decided to go out there and give it a shot. That was in 1998 and the rest is history!
Q) What do you do in your spare time?
A) I write in my spare time. I am working on a screen play and a novel that I am really wrapped up in. I also do wood working, as well.
Q) What is your latest obsession? A book? A movie? An activity? A sport?
A) I would say it’s my own book, my own novel that I am working on. It’s a big epic fantasy, kind of like The Lord of the Rings. I’ve been working on it for five years and I am almost done.
