DC’s Legends of Tomorrow – Slay Anything
By: Courtney Groom
It’s time to get a little nostalgic as the legends crash a high school reunion in 2004 in attempt to stop a serial killer from finishing unfinished business in this coming of age comedy/ classic slasher episode. It starts off in 2004 at Iron Heights Penitentiary as Freddy Meyers (Garrett Quirk) execution takes place. He is asked for his final words and he announces that he loves his mother, who is watching from another room. The execution takes place as his mother (Beth Riesgraf) screams for him.
As the scene cuts “Heaven is a Place on Earth” by Belinda Carlisle starts to play as a coroner (David Jacox) is driving down a dark street with Freddy’s body in the back. The van quickly loses control, the radio turning itself up and the brakes no longer working causing it to crash. The coroner survives this crash, pulling himself out of the van. As he gets to the back of the van, he notices the door open and Freddy’s body bag open. He is quickly greeted by a knife in his chest.
We flash to Constantine (Matt Ryan) is sneaking around trying to hide from the other Legends, but he is greeted by Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) who is trying to get answers as to why he hasn’t moved out yet. Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) interrupts the conversation by suggesting that to deal with their new encore problem they should travel back in time and reform them when they’re children. His idea is quickly shut down as Sara explains they’re dealing with villains fresh out of hell and they can’t be reformed just like his “Fairy God Girlfriend” as described by Constantine.
Just on time a small twinkle plays announcing that Nora Darhk (Courtney Ford) has arrived on the ship. She is now a fairy godmother to children with the greatest need (all they really want is a pony). Nora wants to help the kids become the best version of themselves, but no one ever became a good person with a pony she explains.
Meanwhile, Nate Heywood (Nick Zano) is trying to get Zari omaz (Tala Ashe) to remember her former life on the ship. However, Behrad (Shayan Siobhan) believes that there was never another version of Zari. When asked if she has any memories of the place, she replies she doesn’t but if she did that she would’ve had a lobotomy.
Gideon (voiced by Amy Louise Pemberton) calls Behrad and Nate to the bridge of the ship where she announces that a serial killer is on the loose in 2004. Ava (Jes Macallan) becomes excited and knows everything there is to know on the serial killer (Freddy Meyers a/k/a “the prom night slasher”) – she even ranked him at Number 5 on the list of all-time killers on her podcast “StabCast.” She announces to the team that he will come back to finish his unfinished business by getting a victim that escaped his first attack.
The Legends arrive in Central City 2004 at a high school reunion. it is soon revealed that this is actually Mick Rory’s (Dominic Purcell) old high school. Ava is fangirling over a trophy that the final victim uses as a weapon to protect herself. Meanwhile, Nate and Ray are outside and find a murdered police officer indicating to the team that Freddy (Garrett Quirk) is there and has made his first move.
As the reunion is taking place inside, Tiffany Harper (Veronika London) is called to stage to reveal the memorial but she doesn’t appear. It is clear to everyone that she is missing and soon discovered on the memorial in front of everyone. Freddy has made his second move now alerting the Legends and the whole school. Freddy has seemingly locked the school with telekinesis, leaving Nate and Ray outside while Sara, Mick and Ava are inside with him and the rest of the school.
In Northumberland County 2020 we see Constantine and Gary Green (Adam Tsekhman) arrive at Constantine’s home. Constantine finds the house to be nothing like how he left it and he runs into himself – except it’s not him. It’s Charlie (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) who previously left the ship.
Back at the school reunion Mick focuses on saving former student Ali (Lisa Marie Digiacinto) while Sara decides to put Ray’s idea to the test and sends Nate and Ray back to 1989 to try and reform Freddy so he never does any of the events taking place or becomes a killer. While in 1989 the two men find Freddy being bullied by other students. To everyone’s surprise Freddy is asked to prom by popular girl Tiffany (Jasmine Vega). Nate soon realizes that these are the actions that cause Freddy to become the killer.
At the reunion in 2004, Sara and Ava catch the killer using his telekinetic powers to kill a former student. However, he soon tries to attack Sara and Ava. On The Waverider Nate and Ray find out where Freddy lives in 1989. Nora starts to hear voices and gets a headache; that’s her fairy godmother powers kicking in. She can hear the wishes of kids with the greatest need, she hears Freddy’s wish and gets sent to him straight away as he is the kid with the greatest need and wish.
Nora appears in Freddy’s room while he is getting ready for prom. As he goes to tell her his wish, his mother interrupts – clearly uncomfortable that he is going to prom. Once his mother has left them alone, he wishes for a cool suit which Nora grants.
Now back in 2004, Mick finally finds Ali and he tries to hide her away from the killer while showing her the place he used to take cover when they were in school. While talking Ali is stabbed from behind, causing Mick to become upset and angry.
Ray, Nora and Nate are in 1989 trying to protect Freddy from the bullies. While they’re watching Freddy and Tiffany dance. Nate realizes the bullies plan is to drop trash from the ceiling onto Freddy, but Tiffany bails on the plan and moves Freddy to a different part of the dance floor. The bullies go for the more violent approach and attack him. They also reveal that Tiffany only asked him to the prom as a joke, causing him to run out of the hall. Nora chases after Freddy and tries to calm him by giving him encouraging words. She eventually gets through to him and grants him one more wish. He takes the stage and wins over the crowd with dance moves he has learnt from music videos.
On The Waverider Zari is locked in a room trying to talk to Gideon. She goes onto the computer. As she types, she begins to have flashbacks of her previous life and manages to unlock the door setting her free into 1989 where she gets into a limo thinking it was ordered for her but really, it’s for the school kids. Freddy, Tiffany and friends get into the limo. While Freddy is in the limo the killer jumps on top of the car revealing that Freddy is in fact not who has been hunting the classmates.
At the reunion in 2004 Mick uses his anger to fight the killer but they use Mick’s heat gun against him and burns Mick. This is when the killer is revealed and it’s Freddy’s mother! She was the killer all along but had a heart attack when Freddy was executed. Now there are flashbacks between the 2004 and 1989. Sara and Ava are fighting her in 2004 while Zari fights her in 1989. Zari unmasks the killer revealing to everyone that it is Freddy’s mother Kathy. She explains that the reason she became the killer was to protect Freddy from other students as she knew they were making fun of him. Behrad arrives just in time to stop her. He uses his totem and with that she vanished from 2004, freeing Sara and Ava.
The aftermath of the mission concludes by showing Zari and Behrad in the medbay having a heart to heart. Zari decides to stay with the Legends and then joins the team back in 2004. After a small reunion scene the group splits up. Ray asks Nora if she would like to dance and then leads her to the dance floor Sara and Ava are found swaying together while Ava fangirls over being a “final girl.” Behrad interrupts both couples and drags everyone to the photobooth causing a small montage to play. There are group shoots, there’s Sara and Ava being a couple, Ray kisses Nora’s cheek, a girls only photo and finally Behrad, Nate and Ray doing their group pose. Sara stops the photos to ask where Mick is and the camera cuts to Mick and Ali in a doorway sharing some kisses.
In the final scenes we go back to Constantine’s house where he is having a drink and a conversation with Charlie. He tells her all about the Northcastle crew and the powerful witch he once encountered, who is none other than Astra’s deceased mother. After a small pep talk from Charlie, he uses his magic to unlock a door and does something he has been scared of doing for the longest time and goes to consult Astra’s mother.
