Dealty Heavy – Reborn

By  |

Q) How would you describe your sound?

As Delta Heavy, we’ve never tried to be just one thing or one genre. We like to try and spread the net a bit wider to help engage the audience in what we’re doing.  I guess we’ve often been known for having quite a heavy sound, but we’ve recently started making tracks that are a lot more musical with more vocals on them. And the upcoming album is shaping up to have some of the heaviness we are known for, but with a good dose of musicality added into the mix.

Q. Who are some of your musical influences?

We’ve got loads of them – from bass artists like Sub Focus, Skrillex and Noisia right the way through to more synth based acts like Kavinsky, Hans Zimmer, Giorgio Moroder and Brian Eno.

Q. You recently released the single “Reborn.” What is the feel and vibe for the song?

It’s quite dark and cinematic.  The vocal was the driving force for the entire tune so it’s based around that, but with a harder drop for the dance floor.
Q. Can you talk about how the video for “Reborn” pairs with the message of the song?

The concept of the song was based around rebirth.  For the video we wanted to loosely use this basis to create a story and in this case it is a piece of thread that drifts into a strange world inspired by Salvador Dali and Tim Burton. It is planted like a seed in the ground and explodes into a storm of thread taking over this little world.  It is then cut loose and drifts away having been reborn.  It’s an idea that was conceived by Chris Bristow who directed it.  We used stop motion again as it allows you to do something so different creatively without having huge budgets to play with.  Ian Robertson who directed the video for “Get By” was also involved with the shooting of the “Reborn” video.
Q. How did the track come to be remixed by June Miller and Spoils?

June Miller have really impressed us with their recent releases and their production is top notch.  We thought they would really be able to provide a darker and harder twist to the original.  For the Spoils remix, we knew that we wanted a bouncy and bassy house mix of “Reborn.” We loved the collaboration they did with Monkey Wrench for a tune called “Enemies In the Dance” earlier this yea. So, it was an obvious choice for us.
Q. What is appealing about releasing music not tied to an album?

Freedom.  It can be entirely about something created in a moment.

Q. What artist would you most like to share a track with in the future?

I would love to collaborate with someone completely separate to our genre and someone who I have been a fan of since I was a kid, someone like Q-Tip or Dave Grohl.
Q. What can fans expect from a live Delta Heavy show?

There will obviously be quite a bit of drum and bass, but generally we try not to tie ourselves down exclusively to one genre so you can expect some added surprises in there.  Our main focus is energy.

Q. You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way to connect with your fans?

It’s a great way to keep your fans up to date with what you are doing, but more importantly its great that your fans can interact with you in a way which used to be much more difficult.
Q. What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of your music?

Thanks for all your continued support we look forward to having much more music for you in 2015!
