Interviews
Dearling – Silver and Gold
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
Both Dave and Rachel – “It’s like Johnny Cash and June Carter decided to do Chris Stapleton and Lady Antebellum.”
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
Dave – “I grew up on a mixture of classical, rock and bluegrass. My influences range from Philip Glass to David Bowie to Bela Fleck.”
Rachel – “I grew up on classical music, Motown, gospel and rock. Plus, great country like Kris Kristofferson and Garth Brooks.”
Q) What is your songwriting process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
Rachel – “Technically, sure, sometimes lyrics come first and sometimes melodies. Sometimes both come at once. Songwriting is mysterious. Sometimes it’s hard work and sometimes it’s pure flow. It’s like these songs exist in another dimension right above us, and we are just catching what we can as it flows by.”
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
Dave – “As a DIY band, we are the hand. We do it all. This record, we did have Chris Bloom mix and master, but we write, produce, direct and create almost every aspect of what we do.”
Q) What can fans expect from a live Dearling performance?
Rachel – “This year we are going to have a high energy and far more country approach to our music and shows. We are from Colorado, so we like a Western sound in what we do. It’s fun.”
Dave – “Usually they can also enjoy some fun interactions between Rachel and I because usually we are balancing the show and the work we put into it with who is babysitting the kids at that time and how school work gets done. All of that comes out on stage.”
Q) What songs off your Silver and Gold EP are you looking forward to performing live?
Dave and Rachel – “All of them.”
Q) What do you hope listeners take away from listening to your new EP as a whole?
Dave – “We hope they love it and that they are inspired by it. We want folks to be a part of what we are doing.”
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
Dave and Rachel – “In our town, there are a variety of excellent venues, but we have particularly loved Red Rocks, the Bluebird, and The Soiled Dove. We have had significant moments in our careers at each of these venues and they are great places for the fans.”
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
Rachel – “Honestly? Max Martin. I just think he is genius.”
Dave – “Fleetwood Mac. Because, Fleetwood Mac.”
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
Dave – “Jamie Allen. He sings from his heart. Coldplay. I love the Ghost Stories record. D’Angelo, John Mayer, Hammock. This list goes on.”
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
Rachel – “In some ways, it feels like the only way to connect to your fans. Without radio and large tours, it’s the best route. We are actually exploring doing more online shows in the next year.”
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
Dave and Rachel – “Thank you. We are incredibly grateful for our fans.”
