Deep Flavors
By: Karen Steinberg
Deep Flavors by Kenneth M. Horwitz showcases classic cuisine that he’s spent years cooking at home and perfecting. He may be a lawyer and CPA by trade, but the man seriously has a passion for cooking. He’s used his problem-solving skills to come up with some creative solutions to various recipes in order to enhance and make more flavorful results in this Kosher-style cookbook.
One standout delicacy that I found was the Potato Kugel recipe. It has minimal ingredients and it gives specific, clear directions. The recipe also offers options to finish it immediately or at a future time, which allows the cook to easily time out presentation for a hungry family. Another favorite recipe was for Hamantaschen. A delicious dessert served for Purim, Horwitz prefaces this recipe with the historical reference to the events behind its creation and the significance to the shape of the cookie. I enjoyed how he also gave alternatives for the filling of the Hamantaschen, so bakers can create ones to their personal taste preferences.
I really liked the font used because it was easy to tell the recipe from the accompanying dialogue. Plus, the text is enhanced with both illustrations and photographs. Additionally, there is also a remarkable variety to the recipes that came from a number of cultures and weren’t just Jewish cuisine.
The author clearly knows how to impart deep flavors, pun intended, when it comes to cooking. His new cookbook is a beautiful celebration for foodies who are interested in creating cuisine that is Kosher style. If you are looking for an extensive collection of recipes that are rooted in family and a love of cooking, be sure to pick up Deep Flavors.
