Interviews
Doris Bessudo – Mexican Dynasties
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How did you become involved with the show “Mexican Dynasties?”
A) Funny enough, both mom and I were approached from different people and we ended up doing it because we love the new light it sheds on Mexico and Mexicans. Breaking the stereotypes especially.
Q) Was there any parts of your life you deemed off limits to the cameras?
A) My children, sister and her family were off limits, but everything else was ok.
Q) We loved seeing your relationship with your mother, Raquel. Has filming the show made the two of you closer?
A) If it is possible to get closer to a human being, then yes! We are crazy close, since forever. The show did help us grieve the loss of my dad together which was very therapeutic.
Q) It’s great to see the Bessudos friendship with the Allende and Madrazo families. What continues to make your families so bonded?
A) I feel so close to all of them. Like the Tía of Adan, Elan and Jenny [Allende} and more of a sisterhood with Paulina [Madrazo]. Gaby, I adore and Oscar [Madrazo] is and has been an amazing close friend. I can tell them everything! We even have a group chat with all of us together and constantly talk amongst each other.
Q) We saw you hosting Shabbat dinner. Why was it so important to you to share your family’s traditions with your friends?
A) Most Americans I know get completely freaked out that there is such a thing as a Mexican Jew. It was important to me to show we exist and thrive in Mexican society. And as Jews, we have always felt so welcomed and accepted. Very assimilated, I would say.
Q) We are so appreciative of you and your mother opening up about your family’s loss of Leon and your brother. Was it a cathartic experience for you?
A) Very Cathartic. I don’t remember crying as much as I did the day of the magazine interview.
Q) We have seen you attempting to help Adan Allende in his music career. What were some important words of wisdom you passed along to him?
A) I feel like Adan has to find his identity as a performer; his voice and individuality, separate from the Allende last name. I encourage him to keep working hard to achieve his dreams and to try to break the umbilical cord!
Q) Are you still working with him to get an EP or album released?
A) You gotta watch and see!
Q) What were some of your favorite moments from filming?
A) I had such fun with the entire cast. We crack each other up. Always fun and light. Riding motorcycle’s with Paulina and going on the hot air balloons were amazing experience as well.
Q) You are active on social media. What kind of fan feedback have you received to the series?
A) Not to brag, but amazing. People really love the show. It’s fun and light, with a bit of drama here and there. And, obviously, everyone is obsessed with my mom’s beauty. I know, annoying.
Q) What do you think it is about “Mexican Dynasties” that has made it such a fast fan favorite?
A) Like I said before, it’s fun and funny. We don’t take ourselves too seriously. Also, it is very special for Hispanics; nostalgic, they all relate you know. I really hope México is the star of the show and we are only supporting cast members. 💃
