Interviews
Dru – The Rebirth 2020
By: Jamie Steinberg
Q) How would you describe your sound?
A) My sounds is 90s R&B modernized with a funky hip hop edge
Q) Who are some of your musical influences?
A) Frank Ocean, Usher, Jodeci, Boyz II Men, Marvin Gaye
Q) Talk about the story behind your new song “YNF.”
A) “YNF” is based on the twenty year anniversary of my former group In Eessence’s smash hit “You’ll Never Find” that was released in 1999 on Funk Master Flex’s 60 Minutes of Funk US gold selling album. I rewrote the verses and updated the production for 2020. Shoutout to my producers Hollywoodpro and Sheldon Moore.
Q) What do you think it is about the song that fans connect to?
A) The concept of your ex not able to find another love like yours, we can all relate to. We have all broken up with someone and said to ourselves, “They won’t find anyone like me.” We all know it’s a healing mechanism, but it helps us move on.
Q) How does the video for the track play into the message behind it?
A) The video has nothing to do with the song. I actually had a dream about the concept while in Russia. It’s a high energy video that showcases Moscow and some high end cars. Stay tuned it will be out early June.
Q) What is your song writing process? Do you need music before you can create lyrics?
A) When I make music, I don’t pay attention to what’s the latest hit on radio. I just make what I feel and love and I make sure there’s emotion put into everything I write. That’s what separates my sound, it’s not influenced.
My process is usually based on thinking up a concept or story I want to talk about. Then, my producer and biz partner Hollywoodpro starts messing with sounds. As soon as I have a melody, I go in the booth and freestyle whatever comes to mind. Then, we listen back and piece in the lyrics as we go. My process usually takes about two hours.
Q) How much of hand do you have in the production of your music?
A) I’m completely involved in every element of making my songs, from production to arranging to songwriting. I have the final say.
Q) Will there be a full album or EP coming in the near future?
A) Yes, my third album The Rebirth 2020 will be released June 26th, 2020 through Effortless Ent/Foundation Media. I can’t wait to show ya’ll what we’ve been cooking up.
Q) Where are some of your favorite places to perform and what makes those locations so significant to you?
A) I really enjoyed performing in Europe. The fans don’t care about hype; they only care about talent. I toured in seven European countries and fifteen cities and the one common thing was their love for singers and raw talent. I can’t wait to go back in 2021.
Q) Who would you most like to collaborate with on a song in the future?
A) I think 6lack is pretty dope and Ty Dolla Sign too.
Q) What album/band are you currently listening to and why do you dig them?
A) Ty Dolla Sign. He has a sick edge about him, but he’s still actually singing. I respect that. He’s a vibe.
Q) You are a part of social media. Why is that such an important way for you to connect with your fans?
A) I’m not a big fan of social media, but whether we like it or not it’s insanely important. The world is now at our fingertips, so we have to take advantage of the chance to connect directly with our supporters. No more middle man, a/k/a record labels.
Q) What would you like to say to everyone who is a fan and supporter of you and your work?
A) I just want to say to my fans and supporters from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU. I will continue to keep banging out these tracks for you I LOVE YOU ALL. Stay Blessed.
