Turning games into movies may not always be the right move to play, but with this movie it’s the right choice. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves demonstrates the advantage of having a team and never trusting everyone you encounter. Throughout the film you are introduced to different characters that are along for the journey, but also want to help take down an evil man. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves takes you into a world of playful characters, laugh out loud moments and good times, even if you have never played the game before.

Edgin (Chris Pine) is a well-known thief who trusts the wrong witch, Sofina (Daisy Head), when trying to get a tablet that can bring his wife back. When Edgin and his best pal Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) are locked away in prison after the mission goes wrong it leaves buddy Forge (Hugh Grant) in charge of taking care of Edgin’s daughter Kira (Chloe Coleman). While incarcerated Edgin and Holga come up with a plan to get out so he can get back to his daughter. When things actually go right, they return home to find Forge is King and has become a male figure in his daughter’s life. In an attempt to take his daughter home, Forge decides to turn against Edgin, making him seem like a selfish man and father. As Forge throws them out, Edgin devises a plan to get his daughter back during the annual games the whole village participates in. He calls on his old team member Simon (Justice Smith) along with new recruits Doric (Sophia Lillis) and Xenk (Regé-Jean Page). Now, he has to help save his daughter, the village and play the games that Forge has arranged.

Michelle Rodriguez steals the show with her comedic relief when it comes to her character Holga. She is the heart of the group and makes sure that everyone is sticking to the plan. Her relationship with Kira is adorable because she established a bond with her from the time she was little until now. She cares for Kira and is like a second mom to her. Hugh Grant’s material as the bad guy is hilarious because he brings this nuance to the movie with his charm and wit. Additionally, Daisy Head is a powerhouse as the evil witch and balances everything out with each scene she’s in.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein deliver with the CGI of the dragons and action of the movie. You are engaged in every single moment of the film from the monsters to the singing. Oh yes, Chris Pine may or may not have some singing moments. This film creates the opportunity for you to explore a different side of the game in a whole new light. From beginning to the end, you are having a good time laughing and enjoying yourself. Never a dull moment.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has a unique way of making you feel like you know how to play this game without ever having to actually do so. It is an enlightening, refreshing, hilarious and adventurous tale of the challenges of thieves. This film depicts the nature of doing the right thing even if it’s not the best thing. You will laugh, may get emotional and enter the world of dungeons and dragons. Also, you may have some huge surprise guests that may pop up in the movie. If you haven’t played the game, you will still certainly enjoy Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and understand the hype!
